Smart Club of Mass. October 25, 2008

Come and join us for the 2nd fun run, we will be sightseeing in and around Hingham, Ma. Great time, really nice people, come and enjoy the day!
We will be meeting at Exit 14 off of Rt. 3, there is a large parking lot there that will be a great spot to meet. ATTN: for us northerns this is NOTSchedule & Directions for the

We will assemble in the commuter parking lot @ exit #14 off of Route 3

Coming from the North on route 3, you will bear left @ the light @ end of the exit ramp, and then take a left @ the next light into the parking lot

From the South, go left @ the end of the ramp and then right @ the light into the lot

Once we have all had a chance to meet and introduce ourselves, we will be leaving in procession @ 11:00 am.

Our next stop will be the Old Ship Church on Main Street in Hingham where a guided tour is planned @ 11:15.*

What a fantastic time we had! 15 smarties showed up, and we had a great run! Thanks Dave and all those who organized this run. My husband and I had a great time, and so did Molly, even though she kept setting off my alarm! I've added some pitcures in the gallery.

Hi Dave - I'm on the list of not RSVPing but I thought I had via email. I do plan to come and I proposed that people from the greater Lowell area find a meeting point. I had suggested the Wendy's at 133 and 495 thinking that would give us easy access to get on 93 south. What do you think?

Our next stop will be the Old Ship Church on Main Street in Hingham where a guided tour is planned @ 11:15.*

To reach the church, go left out of the parking lot and through two red lights (note: @ the second light be sure to be in the middle lane). Once you have crossed route 53, you will be on Main Street, Hingham (route 228). As an aside, the intersection that you have just gone through is known as Queen Anne’s Corner—NOT after a member of the British nobility, but rather for the madam (Queen Anne) who used to run a house of ill repute at the site of what is now a liquor store on your left as you pass through the intersection.

Right next to this location is a building that used to be an old inn and is now an upscale restaurant called the Scarlet Oak. (At the end of our little tour, is you do not care for Asian cuisine, this is a handy alternative).

Continuing down Main Street, after about a mile, you will reach an area where the homes are set very far back from the road. This is known as the “Glad Tidings Plain Historic District” and is significant, not just historically (it is on the National Register), but because when Eleanor Roosevelt drove down it, she was said to have proclaimed that this street was “The Most Beautiful Main Street in America”...and she saw a LOT of them!

Approximately 4 miles from “Queen Anne’s Corner”, Main Street (aka route #228) will take a sharp right @ a blinking light ( you will have gone through one red light @ Free Street).






Continue on approx. .4 miles until you reach Centre Hingham—you will see a big old blue/green School House building with an oval Dependable Cleaners sign on the side—make a left there—it is still Main Street, but Route 228 diverges off to the right. Continuing on .3 miles you will reach the top of “Pear Tree Hill” and .3 miles later will enter “Bachelor’s Row”—staying on Main Street. These are all areas on the National Register of Historic Districts. Bachelor’s Row was so named because many of the homes along it were built in the 17th century by sea captains involved in the china trade. These men were always @ sea and never home, so marriage was a bit problematic for them.

At the end of bachelor’s row you will come upon a very large, square and unusual looking church with a looped driveway on your right—that is where we will park for the tour of the Old Ship Church. Est. 1685.

As noted earlier, we will be given a tour of the Old Ship Church @ 11:15. This building has a great deal of significance in the history of America, and the short tour should be quite interesting.


Leaving the looped driveway of Old Ship, we will turn right and continue to the end of Main Street, then turn left in front of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. You will now be facing the original Talbot’s Store (Ladies, if you want directions to the Talbot’s Outlet Store later, ask Cindy). Go the right of Talbot's and quickly bear right onto Lincoln Street. On your left in the center of the island is a statue of Abraham Lincoln, whose ancestors first settled in Hingham. On the right just ahead of you is the Old Ordinary, a 17th century inn and pub that served patrons for hundred of years traveling along what was then the Boston Post Road. This exit is actually in Rockland and at end of ramp is Home Depot. The road eventually goes to Hingham. If you are coming south, go to left at end of ramp and there is a HUGE commuter lot right there on your left.

Is that on Hingham Street? I looked at the Live Search Map (sort of like Google Earth) and I see that Route 3 is the Southeast Expressway. Exit 14 appears to be Hingham Street.

Norm I think thats a great idea! Lets get the "Wannabe's" involved as well as the "still waitings" it would get them more excited about their smarts

Talked with Gillian this morning. Two thoughts. 1) anyone who is coming alone might want to take a smart wannabe along for the ride. 2) the northern crowd, NH and Dracut may want to meet and convoy down together. What do you think. ps I think I can. Gotta see what the wife is doing.
