Event Description

BUYING TICKETS:

I've been wondering about how our advanced tickets for $25 were gonna work out. I've finally got the answer...

WE'RE ALL GETTING $25 TRACK+WEEKEND TICKETS AT THE GATE.

We're still gonna meet at Walmart on Saturday morning at 7:30am as planned, but I don't have tickets to pass out. We'll hang out for a little bit, if anyone wants to go into town (or Walmart) for food and meet us a little later in the parking lot (8:00am), that'll be fine too. By 8:30am, we'll be leaving Walmart to go to the track.

Special Group Pricing Extravaganza will be $25 per guest (not per car) at the gate. Mike is waving the track fee, and we're just paying a set price for the Track + Wine Festival.

SATURDAY MORNING MEETING:
Here's what I'm thinking, via Google Maps. We can meet in Watkins Glen (the town) right on the lake, less than 15 minutes from the Watkins Glen International track. The Walmart will have a big enough parking lot so that we don't crowd some business unexpectedly. I'll hand out the advance tickets there, so that when we get to the track, we can just drive in. Like I said, folks without advance tickets can just pay at the track.

So, meet at Walmart in Watkins Glen, hand out tickets, and then drive over to the track for our laps!

AT THE TRACK:
The laps will be at 9:00am on Saturday.

We will need to get there at 8:45, and go through Gate 2.
When we get in the gate, take a right, and go behind the grand stand.
There is a crossover gate where you cross the race track.
We will sign waivers that say if we wreck it's on us.
We do our 3 laps around the track.
Then, escorted by Pace Car, we will be led to our parking place.

WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SWITCH DRIVERS. I apologize, because many had asked about that, but Mike said that because we're basically being squeezed in, the track said we would not be allowed to switch drivers. Mike basically said (in a much nicer way) that the higher-ups would like us on the track, but would then like us off it.

Saturday will be a free-for-all to enjoy the Wine Festival, go back in to town, do whatever you want, and chill.

SUNDAY MORNING BREAKFAST:
9:00AM on Sunday, for anyone that wants to stay, we will be going toSavard's Restaurant at 601 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen, NY. We may have to get creative with parking, but I'm sure we can do it. It's not like we take up that much space.

Sunday afternoon, after breakfast, I guess we'll be breaking up for the drive home.

Let me know if anyone has any further concerns or questions!

Same here - Friday/Saturday sounds good.

I got a call back from Mike at Watkins Glen, promptly at 1:00. :) I have all of the details for the event, and he's really excited that we chose Watkins Glen for the event.

He said they are doing Pace Car laps around the track for general admission folks throughout the event, but he would sure love to give the group of Smarts their track time as one big group. The best time to do it would be around 9:00 or 9:30 in the morning. Sunday would be better, but Saturday would work fine too, it would just be busier. We would receive a discounted group rate for combination Wine Festival passes and Track Time tickets.

Everything is usually purchase in advance for groups, but I mentioned that others may straggle on in last-second, and he was more than happy to accommodate those that do if they choose. We'll be exchanging emails and hammering out the details.

He also offered to have us all stop on the front stretch, around the Start/Finish line for a group photo and snapshot opportunities which is pretty cool, and he also said that he had an idea in mind where we would all have an infield place to park our cars, creating a little car show.

Everything seems to be clicking together very well. He said any Smart that makes it is guaranteed track time rain or shine. I don't know about anyone else, but I'll be there!

Should we chop the event down to just Friday / Saturday or Saturday / Sunday? If track time is at 9:00am on either Saturday, we'd probably leave Saturday evening, and if it's on Sunday, we'd all arrive on Saturday. Any votes on which day we'd want?

-------------------------

He mentioned that at end of April, he was just about to send out a Newsletter for a for car club meet. All sorts of car clubs from all over usually gather for a show, and all of the money goes to charity - one of those being JDRF; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

SO... If this Wine Festival takes off, and we get a good crowd, I'd love for this to be the Inaugural event, and any subsequent annual events could gather at the Car Club Meet! :)

So it looks like we're going to keep the Wine Festival dates. I'm fairly hopeful we'll still get on the track even considering the event going on. The Festival website also suggests both camping in the infield and hotel lodging. Everyone will be accommodated!

No, no no - I'm up for the wine fest weekend!  After the 3 laps around the track it's off to sample some of the grape. :D

XCAPEPOD, the laps around Watkins Glen for the $25 admissions is 55mph. I know, a little depressing. A pack of racing Smarts would be too exciting to miss, though!

Really?! That's actually way too funny!

Well..!

Should we instead plan the event for Saturday the 14th through Monday the 16th so we can get track time on Monday and still participate in the Wine Festival? I know that people typically don't like taking Mondays off.

So - we could either gather at the Wine Festival or have our own weekend - from Friday July 27th through Sunday July 29th.

I posted this on Club Smart Car as well - should be a reasonable drive for those in the Toronto and Ottawa areas.

Sounds great! Will there be speed limitations on the laps (like the Indy event)?
