Event Description

This is a joint picnic organized by the Kansas City and St. Louis smart owner groups, and we've had queries from five adjoining states.

Just a social cookout in a pleasant town.

We're going to meet at 11AM on May 14, 2011 in Columbia, MO and picnic and socialize.

Fairview Park

Columbia is a pleasant oasis in the middle of a busy and active state, seemingly with a college on every corner, and a park every few blocks.

We plan to gather, cook, eat and socialize. Then we'll have a short drive to get familiar with the area, and arrange a group photo in the process. From there,
folks can visit on their own.  NOTE - There are two well attended Farmer Markets, open from 8 to noon with produce and farm products.

  • We'll meet in Fairview park which has BBQ cooking facilities and a covered space (just in case)
  • It will be a bring your own meat, drinks and cooking tools, with everyone bringing a pot luck style item.
  • We will bring paper products, disposable utensils, charcoal, trash bags, and a variety of condiments.
  • Thanks to Beth Mead of the city tourism office, we'll put out some suggestions of places to visit in the area in this forum, and have handouts at the park. Hopefully, there will be a volunteer from the tourism group to visit us with a brief talk and answer questions about the area.
  • We'll include a group photo, and a short area driving tour of the area.
  • Anyone with knowledge of the area, and suggestions of places along the way to and from would be appreciated. Chime in with your thoughts and experiences.
  • AND tell us what you're bringing for your pot luck item -  here are suggestions:
  • snack item
  • casserole/covered dish
  • vegetables
  • salad
  • dessert

Please bring enough for 6 or more people. Bring your cooking tools and serving utensils for your dish.
Caveats
: This happens to be graduation weekend for the largest college, MU ... expect a lot of folks in town.
We'll collect a modest contribution at the event, probably less than $10 to cover cost of park rental, charcoal, etc.

See you there!

Columbia has a lot to offer; wineries, historic small towns surrounding with B&B's, robust music scene, BBQ and surprisingly some fairly good ethnic restaurants.   I am in Columbia every year volunteering for the MS150 ride and always find something new and fascinating to explore.
