The smart I have ordered lacks power steering. Is this unwise?

No. In my opinion, it is very wise. It saves a bunch of money and you likely won't notice the lack of power steering.

Even the salesman I talked to thought PS was quite unnecessary as the weight is mostly in the back of the car. I wish I didn't have it!
