SATO

Have you checked your cabin air filter?? mine had mold on it!!!!!

please check your cars cabin air filter. it is suposed to be changed at the 10k check up. I did it all miself to save hundreds of dolars and saw the horror!!

The compartment is located behind the pedals on the drivers side (US version) there are two tabs you press towards the pedals and the door hinges on three plastic tabs. The little door comes off and you will see the filters side there, just pry it out softly and look at it carefully. also observe the air flow arrows both on the filter as well as the compartment wall.

If you use A/C a lot, turn it off for a few miles before parking the car; that shoudl prevent themold from forming.
Jesus Christ, this is f'ing gross. Checked mine after I saw this post and it's got mold/crap all over it! I've only 780 miles on mine and I haven't used the AC. I'm not going to pay to replace this, smart is. Goddamn french.
Fred, please take pics and document this issue. cal your dealer and ask them to document your issue as well! I don't care how much a NEW one costs, I'm not driving with a mold source in my NEW car!!!
turning off the air before you get somewhere is masking the problem. it is like telling me that if my drivers side mirror vibrates too much roll down the window and touch it every time you are going to use it to change lanes!!!!!
Sato, that's great information.....did you discuss this problem with the dealership? what did they say or do? I'm going to check mine today. I now have about 1700 miles. I love this forum for this reason, always good insite on issues about the smartcars.
thanks, Dennis
ps: great pictures on how to access the filter.
told a smarty friend to check his.. 2k on the odometer on his... and he called me back gagging.. his was just as moldy...

I think WE should ALL look into it for health reasons first but also demand the dealer replace the filter at no cost to us!!!!! please document your own with a dated pic and how many miles you have on the odo... this should be a recall item!
lets all check this out!

Come on people this can be serious... please every one check the filter, it takes 2 minutes to do!
I will check mine tonight...I have over 5000 miles on the car. I am hoping that because I am in a very low humidity area that it is ok...I sure hope it doesn't look like that one.
On a business trip as of this writing, but will check the filter this weekend in all 3 of our Smarties.
Cheers,
Jeff
this thread should have a sticky... anyway "Bump"
2400+ miles, no more than 10% with AC on, Southern California environment, no mold, almost nothing in the way of dirt either.
Mine has 6500 miles, a large proportion of them with the a/c in the summer. Dirty, but no mold.

My car has 8800 miles on it. I just checked my cabin filter and it looks almost as bad as yours with several spots of mold growing.

I wondered what was going on as I have been smelling mold in the ventilation system for a few minutes when I turned on the A/C recently.

Thanks for the tip.
