Hi all! Hopefully I will be getting my smart next week. Does anyone ever use regular gas, not premium as recommended, at least once in a while? Just curious about the results. Thanks. Lu
Yes you can run the cheaper gas if the extra $1.60 a tank is killing you. But if you had a scanguage you would know that to compensate for the lower octane the computer retards the timing. Now your driving a retarded smart.
Lu- Over the past year there have been many, many discussions on this topic. The end result is always the same- The smart is designed to run on premium. Period. If you run anything less it will "de-tune" itself automatically to protect the engine. This will reduce power and mileage. Running anything less than premium is a false economy since the engine performs it's best on the recommened octane. The people behind the smart are well aware of the difference in price per gallon but designed the car for maximum mileage delivered by maximum engine performance.
