CAN YOU ADD CRUISE CONTROL AND NOT MESS UP WARRANTY

Some of the dealers will add the cruise if they have a local shop that will do the install, but it is kind of like adding an aftermarket radio. It shouldn't have any effect on the warranty BUT that is up to your dealer. Worth mentioning just to get their take on it. I believe both cruise units can be unplugged to take the car to the dealer for service if you need to.
Check your warranty booklet, page 7:

A. Some Modifications Do Not Void the Warranties But Are Not Covered
Certain changes that you might make to your vehicle do not, by themselves, void the warranties described in this booklet. Examples of some of these changes are:
• installing non-smart USA parts, components, or equipment (such as a non-smart USA radio or speed control); and
• using special non-smart USA materials or additives.
My dealer said it is not a problem. The said they install the Area451 cruise control at the dealership. The factory warranty is pretty freaking short. I've already put 3,000 miles on my smart in one month! My warranty will be over in a year at that rate. you can purchase additional warranty time for your car but the cost goes up the more miles you have on it. It's pretty cheap up to 3,000 miles, the next tier is between 3,000 and 12,000 miles. I plan on getting the one for 84,000 miles for a few grand before I hit 12,000 miles on mine. At least that way I will have piece of mind that if anything major goes wrong I'm covered. Of course, I might just be the one that has nothing go wrong and could of saved the money, that's what usually happens to me lol

In addition, Saturday I installed the Area451 cruise control on my 09 coupe. Was simple (for me at least) and I did not have one problem with the installation. They provide excellent very detailed instructions on their website, step by step with highly detailed photos to guide you through it. The unit works great! I am more than happy with it and how well it functions. Since I drive to visit family 300 miles away on a regular basis this was a necessity. No more stiff right foot! I am also more than happy to share my experience to anyone wanting to install this unit themselves. There are a few parts of the installation that may not be so straight forward if you do not have a background in electronics or mechanics or are not mechanically inclined.
We have MDC units on both of our smarts and have never had an issue with the warranty. A lot of dealers all over the country install the MDC and the Area 451 units now days. In order for the CC to have an effect on the warranty the unit must be proven to do damage that was relevant to the problem you would have.
Hi,
I ahave 3 cars and nonoe of them have cruise control (NONSMARTS) I have found that driving in todays traffic does not allow cruise control to really be effective because the other drivers are constantly getting in your space?

Does this make since to anyone?

I use to love cruise control but todays other drivers are cutting into your spaec.
Fred
Fred,

I think that depends on where you live and what your driving needs are. I tend to agree with you (here in central and western Colorado), but when you go to Nebraska, Wyoming, or Kansas for example it still does make sense for those long trips on flat, straight, and relatively empty roads.

I have a Honda Element with cruise control and I rarely ever use it, unless we go on a cross country trip and then it is nice. In Denver and up to the mountains it isn't very useful however and that is where I drive my smart. (You need to downshift a lot in the mountains and CC does not like that and the heavy traffic in the front range pretty much renders it useless as well).

YMMV, t.

My question is why the dealer/factory don't offer CC as an option or standard on the passion ?
Rumor is a factory CC may be offered soon. I'm sure that question will be asked of Dave Schembri at the Midwest Cruise-in 12-14 June.

Qbviously, Diamler, does not yet understand the American market----All one needs to do is surf the threads and read the owner "reviews". Almost without question, the average review mentions the lack of CC.

I can refute that point!!! They said my cruise caused the problem and they could not and would not prove it. Sent CC to manufacture and they checked it (no problems). I reinstalled it and it has worked fine.

Thanks Ted & J
Additionally, I find it difficult to understand the term "inappropriate". CC is well known to be a fuel saving device on the road----otherwise, why worry about high road millage quoted--are they assuming that no one will travel in their smartie or is it really an engineering/production/cost issue ??
