Which arm rest did you settle on if you don't mind me asking?

I also did the one wire at a time, I thought it best to reduce the chances of something going wrong with that method.

Seumas,...
Seems to be a "little" more now...
~Note: See the Pic... I slid it forward to right where the console starts to curve up, to get as far forward as possible... Wife is short and sits way forward, and I'm Tall, and sit far back, so we both use it at the same time... I use the back half and she uses the front half "It Works, whata suprise"... Its Nicely padded and nice French Stitching, and who wouldn't like to have a nice Extra Cubby Box...<:-))
~Note: See that Flange on the bottom... "I cut that Stright back to the same width as the front leaving a 1/2" lip... I made a Cross Bracket at the Back, and one Screw hole in the Center of the Bracket for a Screw to locate the back part of the rest... The console is only a couple inches wide back there... Something Change to the Smart Console I guess...??? Anyway, with that Flange it wider than the Seat Belt brackets... Oh it would go in there, but rubbing on the seatbelt brackets...??? I kinda think a 450 console looks like the back end of this rest... You may not do this... But I thought I needed to for a Better fit... You could Mount it in about 5 minutes with the "3" screws you get with it...!!! Maybe that's all you need...!!!...??? Anyway we Love it... Works Good, Looks Good, and Priced $200.00 Lower Than the Others...<:-))
~Oh... Email or Call them to see if its in stock and Ready to ship...!!! And ask them whats UP with the Rear Fit Of Their Rest... Curious Minds on this website Would Like To Know...<:-))

Boris, what is an MDC unit and an Area 451, I'm unfamiliar with those terms. What do they cost to buy? What does installation cost? Is there a difference between an MDC Unit and an Area 451, which one would be better for a 2008 cabriolet? We really want to get cruise for those 600 mile trips between Indiana and NC. Please help clarify a source where I can buy criuse units and what it costs to install.
Thanks for your help,
Charlie and Sue Sharrard

We have MDC units on both of our smarts and have never had an issue with the warranty. A lot of dealers all over the country install the MDC and the Area 451 units now days. In order for the CC to have an effect on the warranty the unit must be proven to do damage that was relevant to the problem you would have.
MDC and area451 are two aftermarket cruise control units for the smart. Here are some links to where to buy them as well as official websites:

This is a simple jumper plug that acts as a "dummy" replacement for your cruise control, so that you can remove the main box without having to reverse all the wiring...

Now that is a must have for us who have CC installed! I just ordered mine.

Thanks
Yes, I put mine in a ZipLock bag, and put it in the Hole with the CRUISE CONTROL Main Box... That way I have it on-hand if needed... (never lost)
heh I was planning on doing the same, securing it with the area451unit that way it will never get lost. But I have a while to devise a plan as it will take at least 2 weeks for delivery. No worries though, not like I need it right away.

The MDC unit is sold through Smart Madness and the Area 451 is sold through a couple of other vendors. Both are good units. The MDC unit is made in Germany and has been a widely used unit all over Europe. A large number of dealers overseas install this unit. There are several difference between the units and both groups of owners love their particular kind.

The difference I see is the following:

The MDC unit plugs right in and there is no need to splice or tap in to any wires. The installation is done by unplugging and plugging connectors.

The MDC unit comes with its own stalk and looks factory, because it is. It comes from another smart model from EU. Some say the color is a lighter shade of gray. I have one in my smart and everyone that I have shown in to says it looks stock.

The MDC unit (new version) now has a Sprint Booster like module that is fully programmable. A similar item costs over $300 by itself and is included with the unit. Some say it is a placebo (usually those that have never tried it), but those that have it love it and love the benefits!

Last thing.... Smart Madness sells the MDC unit for less than what others sell the Area 451 unit.

Both are good and the choice is yours.

Installation... Since the MDC unit is all plug and play Smart Madness charges $100 total for installation and also provides assistance over the phone at no charge.

My dealer said it is not a problem. The said they install the Area451 cruise control at the dealership. The factory warranty is pretty freaking short. I've already put 3,000 miles on my smart in one month! My warranty will be over in a year at that rate. you can purchase additional warranty time for your car but the cost goes up the more miles you have on it. It's pretty cheap up to 3,000 miles, the next tier is between 3,000 and 12,000 miles. I plan on getting the one for 84,000 miles for a few grand before I hit 12,000 miles on mine. At least that way I will have piece of mind that if anything major goes wrong I'm covered. Of course, I might just be the one that has nothing go wrong and could of saved the money, that's what usually happens to me lol
the dealer in Portland, Oregon advised my daughter that you can get 48 month 60,000 miles with l00.00 ded everytime you come in or $1595 with no deductible. You can get 60 months or 75,000 miles for 1895,00 and no deductible. You have to purchase before the 24000 miles show up.
Does any one know someplace in Albequerque NM That will install cruise control. If so please email me at eegy@aol.com. Thanks
