I've never been a fan of audible signals anyway, and the Smart's beeps when locking/unlocking seem exceptionally loud. My other car (a Benz) silently flashes the indicators - once for unlock, thrice for lock. This seems much more civilized, and less annoying to me and the neighbors. Does anyone know if the signal volume can be muted or turned down, or rerouted to my lights? Alternatively, where might I find wiring diagrams that a semi-technical person could follow?

Any (polite) suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I share your annoyance (but I do like that there are three short beeps - rather different from other cars) but have not found any way to change the volume or turn off the beeps. Let me know if you figure it out.
My 2009 Brabus coupe does not beep. I get the light flash when I lock or unlock the doors. I don't know if this is correct or not, but I am happy I am not beeping!!

Aha! That implies an upgrade is available. That's good news - though I'll see what it costs before I start celebrating ... I've only had the little guy for two months, so it's a bit early to start thinking of trading up just for the light-flash.
My car has not been back to the dealer for anything since I took delivery on May, 20th. A friend who works for the local Smart center says his 2008 has always beeped. He looked at mine and could not see where anything has been done to change anything. I hope you can get yours changed to your liking, George.
Hmmm.... my 2009 doesn't beep at all. The lights flash, that's all. Maybe there's a way to select what you'd like your car to do?
My 2009 does not beep but I wish it did. Can it be changed? Other cars have a menu that one can select the beep or just the lights.

Hmmm ... To clarify, my lights flash as well. The user manual says, "Press [unlock] button the key once. All turn signal lamps flash once. ... Press [lock] button on the key. ... the turn signal lamps flash three times." But still nothing about the acoustic signal. Now I'm bummed to know that other drivers are beepless. Might it have anything to do with the optional alarm ("anti-theft warning system", not electronic immobilizer) that my orphan was already equipped with? Ric, do you also have the alarm option? Alan, do you not?

Am I getting closer to an answer ...
Yes Ted, I know that I should have asked the dealership when I was getting my car washed today, but I didn't remember until I got home, and in this corner of Illinois, dealerships are closed tomorrow. At least give me points for reading the manual cover to cover, and searching the site for previous discussions before posting :-)

I enjoy reading the lively discussions on this board, and I've noticed that several contributors have found solutions independently of the dealerships, and are willing to share their discoveries. Maybe I should have posted this in the "Smart Mods" section, or even "New to Smart", instead of "Nuts and Bolts", but I figured this would get the most tech-savvy crowd.
I believe the idea of the car beeping upon locking or not has to do with having the alarm system or not. Was at a local show/smart gathering a little while back, and one person next to me didn't have the alarm, and he was kinda surprised to hear mine beep when i locked my doors.

To be honest... i wouldn't doubt if there's some method of turning the beep on or off. I think there's even a short little routine to perform in order to shut off DRL's.... so i wouldn't doubt that there's a way to turn off the lock/unlock beeps.
My 2009 Brabus coupe does have the anti-theft option so perhaps that is the reason for the beeps.
I myself have the anti-theft alarm and it beeps once for unlock and three times for lock, plus the parking lights blink. I would prefer not to have the beeps, so if it would be good to know if this can be deprogrammed.

Thanks for your time and let's be careful out there,
Pops and Car-lito
Beeps are alright by me except when we're camping. The beeps go on at lock up time, and the lights shine into the next camp site. Does not make for a happy camping neighbors .

One night I just left it unlocked and pulled the car up to the tent door. No beeps or lights.
Next morning, no GPS either, dispute being well hidden on the Smart "secret shelve".

I plan a fix on the problem for next years camping season. A2Jack
