I'm unable to see my reserve fuel status by "repeatedly pressing" the button on the left side of the cluster. I have to push the button 3 times within about 1 second to see the maintenance staus, but it won't show the reserve fuel. The manual says it will. I don't want to wait till I'm on reserve to see it. No other issues.

The reserve shows when you reach 1.0 gallons left, then it counts down by tenths to 0.
You don't have to push anything. As Doug mentioned, when you get down to one gallon, the "mileage" number goes away and 1.0 replaces it...and goes down as you continue to drive to the gas station. :o)
As I said, the manual says what to do. Mine does not appear to be operating correctly. I KNOW if I wait it will switch to the reserve indication. Has anyone tried following the manual instructions of forcing the fuel indication into reserve mode? I don't like the idea that mine is not functioning correctly. I've run the thing down quite low a couple times already trying to get it to switch to reserve and haven't had that occur yet. 6700 miles on it so far.
What you don't KNOW is that the first two replies are accurate. Push the button all you want - the reserve fuel only displays at the 1.0 gallon or less point - along with the blinking gas pump icon.
like jwight said... the first two replies are correct. i, too, thought that pressing the button displayed the reserve fuel remaining, but it only helps to swap between mileage and reserve fuel once you get to the 1 gallon remaining mark. Keep in mind that this is not when you first get to the very last bar of the fuel gauge. You'll still be able to drive quite a bit until you get to the last gallon. It's actually roughly an 8.7 gallon tank with a 1 gallon reserve. Least i think that's what the manual says.
Thanks Ryan for an actual answer. The other replier is the reason I no longer come to this, or any forum. No answers, no help, just standard forum bullying. Thanks again and good luck with your Smart.
You got plenty of help and a reply in the same format as your response to the first two posters. The fact is that what you said should happen when you push the button does and will not happen. You read the manual wrong; get over it. Or not.

Yeah.... i don't see how the first two replies weren't "actual answers". I said the same thing.... just a bit more of an explanation about it. You won't see the reserve until the tank hits the last gallon. don't need to push anything.... unless it gets down to that last gallon, the reserve contents shows up, and you want to see what mileage you're at.
There is and always will be a heated debate as to how much fuel a smart tank holds. The manual says 8.7 gal with a 1.3 gal reserve. It is not exactly clear if the 8.7 includes the reserve or not. Personally, I don't really care. when the gauge gets low, I fill it. Same for when I fill it and it doesn't showw full on the gauge. Usually after a day or so, it says full. don't worry about it.

If you really need to know how much fuel is left, you could get a ScangaugeII it shows lots of information such as Speed, MPG, Gas used, Gas left, trip mileage motor temp, etc.
I went about 15 miles after I hit "0.0" and got 9.007 gallons in the tank.
I'm guessing anything over 8.7 is in the filler neck. There's a caution in the manual about not topping off to avoid flooding the evaporative canister.

Hi, jwright - I didn't top off. Like I said, I went a few miles after it said "0.0" (slowing down, I might add, to conserve fuel). It's possible the pump was off, but that's what it said - 9.007 gallons.
