What is the best and easiest trailer hitch to put on the Smart Car? I want one for hauling camping/vacation gear.

I got mine from uHaul, two months before you could get the same thing on the web much cheaper - but either way, it isn't a bad install, and you get a 1.25" slider, so you don' t have to have the ball always on. Works great!
How about some details: Brand? Ball size? Installation instructions? How hard is it to install?
Please..

Bill-
Here's a link to a few devices that seem ideal for the casual trailer user. (Like a motorcycle trailer)http://www.smarteparts.com/Services.html
I read this thread last week and emailed the ppl at smarteparts to get some more info, they emailed me back and said they were no longer going to sell parts for the smart. Anybody else heard of them going out of business? Dam shame, they had fair prices and I was going to buy the bike rack.

I was told by my Dealer that a trailer hitch voids the warrenty.
I contacted "SmartUSAInsider" and they told me that this hitch should NOT be used to haul a trailer. EVER!

Hi Bill,

Take a look at the Curt hitch from etrailer.com. I've seen two smarts with this hitch and it looks great. It's an easy install for the mechanically inclined. http://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2009_Smart_ForTwo.htm.

Here's a link to their pdf install instructions. http://www.etrailer.com/instructions.aspx?pn=11020.
Here's a link to their YouTube trailer hitch install. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzblYIrPSP8.

I've also seen a couple of Uhaul trailer hitches. They have a three point installation and look as good as the Curt hitches. They advertise on their website for $190 plus installation.
Hi All
I wanted to share this Trailer hitch with you all its easy to install and the price is not to bad.Hope it helps yeah. Joe

Hi Joe,

Smarteparts is having trouble with their spin on spare tire mount causing the tow bolt nut weld to break from shear force. IMHO, I would be cautious to think that any trailer hitch using the tow bolt holes could face the same fault.
SMARTPARTS - Who makes the hitch that goes into the SMART bolt holes informed me that it should NEVER be used for hauling a trailer.

Hi Lee,

I beleive smart USA's official position on trailer weight is; “Trailer tongue weight should not exceed 100lbs.” I'm providing some technical data that I copied from the smart technical manual.

Loads and weights data from smart technical manual

Permissible Front axle load (GAWR front) = 970 lbs
Permissible Rear axle load (GAWR rear) = 1455 lbs.
Curb weight for passion coupe = 1652 lbs
Curb weight for passion cabrio = 1740 lbs
Permissible gross vehicle weight (GVWR) = 2247 lbs
Permissible payload (occupants + luggage) = GVWR – Curb weight
of which max weight in luggage compartment = 110 lbs

Permissible payload for passion coupe = 595 lbs
Permissible payload for passion cabrio = 507 lbs

If the permissible payload for a cabrio is 507lbs and two occupants normal combined weight is 300 lbs then this leaves 207 lbs of payload that can be carried by the smart car. Meaning the payload whether in the luggage area and/or the tongue weight of a trailer plus hitch weight should not exceed 207lbs. An other way to look at it is that the Curb weight plus the permissible payload weight should not exceed the permissible gross vehicle weight rating (GRWR) of 2247 lbs. I haven't found any data on the capable pulling weight of the smart car. Anyone?
Bill, if you will contact me @1-800-597-1934 I may have a deal for you. I have owned my smart since they first came to this country and constructed a trailer and made my own hitch that I have used with absolutely NO problems at all. I can send you photo's of the trailer and hitch should you be interested. I will sell both hitch, wiring, and trailer complete should you be interested. My reason for selling is I have sold my smart.
Let me hear from you.
