A small sum of money gets you a Lilliputian car that returns the third-best fuel mileage of any vehicle here. The Smart Fortwo delivers solidly on its niche-market promise. It’s the ultimate urban vehicular solution as defined by stylish cachet, excellent fuel economy and — by virtue of being the smallest — being also the biggest gun in the parking wars.
Interesting when they start comparing fuel-efficient cars especially number of passengers, storage space, etc.), they forget to compare prices! We had a deposit on a Camry Hybrid two years ago before they started delivering them and our cost was going to be closer to $32K (loaded). We never took delivery because we just couldn't make up our mind if it was worth it or not.
Parking--I had to pick up my smart phone (ironic huh!) at the repair shop in Boston the other day...very hard place to find a parking slot and one was open almost in front of the store. I was so in shock, I just pulled in. Had to jockey it abit though. I still don't have a since where my fenders are yet. I had to laugh!
I dine at local restaurant fairly often that has a choice spot that is small, odd shaped and is only accesible to a smart or a M/C. The manager there knows me and likes me to park there so he can here all the smart comments. He said if I make the sign he will put it up...SMART PAKING ONLY. Did I mention I'm in the sign business? It's great to be friends with the Hooters manager!
I love the parking availability created by owning a smart. I was able to park in Plymouth, on the waterfront in one of those coveted free spots in the middle of tourist season yesterday. I *heart* this car mightily.
Have had 3 fun parking experiences so far- The first one was at a political function. The lot was overflowing and as cars circled around looking for someone to leave my wfie saw a really small gap between a Hummer and a Honda along the curb. She asked if I thought I could fit- It looked too tough to try and parallel alongside the Hummer- She suggested I go straight in which I did. I stuck out less than the Hummer was wide! A group of kids playing soccer watched me pull in and then cheered! The second time I pulled in between two of those giant gas guzzling Mini Coopers- They are GIANT! The latest was just this morning at coffee-pulling alongside a Rolls Royce- one of the new ones- Now THAT is a big car! The comparison was hilarious!
All the news lately is about Americans switching to smaller cars- I dunno- They all look pretty big to me!
I had a few fun parking experiences so far with one in particular commemorated with photos.
I was on my way to Vegas (from San Francisco) I pulled over to the gas station in Bakersfield and there was the very car from "Back to the Future" movie parked right there in front of the gas station, drawing a crowd of excited people talking to the owner.
As I parked right next to it, the owner of that car comes over to my smart and shouts over everybody's voices "what time did you come from?"
"Near American Future" I responded laughing. Crowd cheered and kept making positive comments and taking photos with both cars.
Movie prepped De Lorean from "Back to the Future" next to Smart from the "Near American Future" made for quite a photo opportunity.
I had similar experience to Jim. That was when I went recently to Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco on the busy day, it is not atypical to have a hard time finding a parking spot within half a mile from the museum on a day like this. On that day, right in front of museum there was enough room for me to park perpendicularly between first few cars in the long row. Since the next car was SUV, my smartie didn't even stick out. The big SUV next to it looked so huge and hilarious by comparison, that cars driving by would stop just to comment on it and take pictures. Not to mention that I ended up having to answer lots of questions from people walking up to my car while I was waiting for my friends to show up.
I went to pick up tickets at the theater early in the afternoon for a night show; the parking lot was packed. Alas! a spot appeared between 2 huge SUV's. I headed to it, slowed down, turned my signal in, was ready to turn....BRAKE! another SMART was in the space and could not be seen until you could see between the SUV's.
A group of 6 of us went to St. Augustine this weekend and paid for 3 parking spots. The police said they couldn't ticket us because they allow 3 motorcycles to park in one spot so they couldn't fine us for 2 cars if we didn't exceed the space alloted for cars. Here are a few pictures.

I have seen those signs. Look on ebay! Take a picture when he puts it up.
