A small sum of money gets you a Lilliputian car that returns the third-best fuel mileage of any vehicle here. The Smart Fortwo delivers solidly on its niche-market promise. It’s the ultimate urban vehicular solution as defined by stylish cachet, excellent fuel economy and — by virtue of being the smallest — being also the biggest gun in the parking wars.
My smart car, Sophie, was parked between two SUV's. I was eating lunch with a friend and we could see my car. My friend said "oh my, Sophie is getting assaulted by two SUV"s!" Another time I parked perpendicular between two SUV's at a parade. The people just stood there and stared. When I got out I said "I have always wanted to do that!" One girl laughed so hard she was crying!
This is not really a parking story but I was waiting in line for a Ferry for about one hour when the next Ferry had a spot left about 110". they pulled me out of line and suddenly I was on the Ferry.

Our neighbors get a kick out of our parking sideways in our carport. We have a corner lot. Only problem is we don't know how close we are to the house. It's deceptive and we always have more than enough room, yet are off the sidewalk area behind us.

I recently was in Victoria BC and found a parking spot posted for minicars. That was all I needed, I backed into the square spot and fit perfectly. Much to my surprise I got a parking ticket not 10 min. later. I found out that all cars must park with wheels parallel to the curb. That STINKS! I still met the intent of not sticking out into the road. Funny part was the parking ticket was issued by officers in two white ForTwos. It was a $20 CDN ticket. Moral: we still have to follow rules written by people who can only conceive of Oversized cars. ;-(
I've been finding parking that no one else can use. With the recent snow, many places have that parking spot that is half filled with plowed snow. Either the spot is narrower or shorter - so a normal car can't fit. I can.
At the bank, at a shopping center, next to a friend's house, I've been in the most convenient spots that no one else can use. It is more fun than I imagined.
I'm sure most of these parking jobs are just for fun, but a word of warning; there are no "special" rules for smart cars. Legally, you have to utilize one parking space. Striped off areas, little "chunks" of unused space, hydrants surrounded by poles do not constitute a legal parking space. A smart must park the same as a Ford F-250 in the eyes of the law. Most of you just got lucky and got away with it. If you got a ticket and tried to contest it and used the defense "that it fit", a judge would laugh heartily at your defense. I'm sure no penal code for any state says you can park "anywhere it fits if your car is small enough".
Even the "cross-ways" curb parking is illegal, as most laws state a vehicle must be pulled in forward, if you pull in cross-wise, you have to pull away opposite to traffic flow, ie; backing out onto a roadway instead of driving directly into the flow of traffic
While WE get a kick out of it, I fear it may be giving our little cars a bad rep.
At the smart car rally in NC/Tennessee, Outsmarting the Dragon, it was neat to see all the smart cars parked double in parking spaces. One gentleman and my Hubby and I shared the handicapped parking spot. He also had a trailer, and the "three" of us fit nicely.
The most memorable parking related incident I can recall was actually trying to leave a parking building at work. Typically, the 'arm' is set to the raised position at the end of the day so everyone can exit without waiting for the arm to raise. One day, apparently, someone forgot to do that. I was following the car in front of me and there were 2-3 cars behind me waiting for traffic to clear. When it did, the lead car pulled out and I pulled up to the arm as it went down. The 'eye' that reads vehicles, however, must have thought my smart was part of the lead car and did not raise the arm. The car behind me was too close to back up very much. I looked at the arm and the space between the end of the arm and sidewalk and it was tight, but doable. So, I just went around the arm and made my escape in the XCAPEPOD!
Now, if I see the arm is down, happens every once in a while, I leave plenty of space between me and the lead car so I don't run into the same situation.
The best parking job I have seen was just recently, at the Fontana Dam Visitor Center - 71 smarts (if I remember correctly) all parked around the circle to get a group shot at the Tail of the Dragon event!
