I have a smart convertible ordered and am waiting. Does anyone know if you can order a spare tire with the rim with the car? At least if I had one at home in the garage, it would't be hard to get a flat changed. I don't like the idea of the can for a spare? Has anyone else done this? par from Florida

This is a subject that concerns many of us. I have been advised that if you have purchased the tire warranty; it will tow you to the nearest Smart Center for repair. I did not purchase it since I live in Lexington and the nearest is in Louisville. I am considering purchasing one front and rear tire, since they are different sizes. I have not looked into the need to purchase the wheel also. I have to think thru it. My model is the silver passion cabriolet and I have the silver paint and trim package.
I have also been advised that ir you have a flat and repair it with the kit that is provided; the tire will need to be replaced. If this is the case, then we would only want to use it in an emergency. In my area there are many tow and tire services that will come to the location and reapir the tire. If you purchase emergency road service under your auto insurance you can be reimbursed for the service call.
Front rims are 4.5 J x 15 H2 with 155/60 R15 74 T M+S tires and rear rims are 5.5 J x 15 H2 with 175/55 R15 77 T M+S tires, so one would need at least two spares. (Page 200, smart Operator's Manual) so two spares would be needed. Driving even short distances on a mis-sized tire and wheel would place car and driver at a greater risk than not being inconvenienced would be worth.
Tire pressure monitoring is standard on all models and smart recommends that tire pressure be checked on a regular basis. Unless this is neglected or driving places where the tires are likely to be punctured is a likely occurance, a smart owner isn't going to get much benefit from carrying spares.
Run-flat tires in the sizes required are going to be very hard to find. www.tirerack.com only lists the OEM Continentals and a search of run-flats by these sizes yielded no results. Currently Tire Rack does not stock winter tires in the size a smart calls for on the front (155/60 15) but they do carry Pirelli and Bridgestone winter tires (175/55 15) for the rear. In fact - they only 155/60 15 tire they carry are the OEM Continentals.
Some (I don't think so very) smart owners are "experimenting" with tire and wheel configurations other than the smart OEM specifications. Besides voiding their warranty, IMHO they are putting themselves and other drivers at risk. Daimler Benz has a pretty good reputation for engineering automobiles. I'm inclined to have some respect for what they recommend.
We have had a customer bring his car in for servicing because someone put the same size tires on the front and rear and it caused severe balancing issues.
Also, the extended warranty program is separate from the wheel and tire protection program. They are purchased separately. The extended warranty does continue the road side assistance.
A2Jack, great idea to fit the spare tire behind the seat. What about a tire jack and lug nut wrench? Where do you store them without chasing them around the car and rattling about?
Tires have a shelf life. And many may think that by getting a tire or set of tires they can just put them on and run them like regular tires since they are regular tires. But age plays an important factor. Watch the ABC News video above for more information.
Since pix was taken I "JB welded a hockey puck to the top of the jack as a pad.
Jacks are plain old small Ford scissors jacks from the junk yard @ $2 each, They work great and will store under front bonnet. A2Jack.
