my worst tankful has been 31 with the AC on HWY and did not hold anyone up... best has been 45 with AC on on two lane hwy average about 50 mph
combined at the moment is 38 was 39 but took a hwy trip and drove too dang fast...
karl
3 tanks of gas in, I'm running at a tad over 37 mpg. Drive is mostly flat, weighted mostly towards city (my commute is about half-and-half, but the non-commute miles are almost all city)
I always thought that driving manual is more fuel efficient than driving automatic. Is the smart different? When you guys post your mpgs, state whether you are driving manual or automatic.
1st tank: 90% hwy: 40 mpg (automatic)
2nd tank: 90% city: 38 mpg (80@ automatic, 20% manual)
3rd tank: driving all manual, can't wait to see what this is like!
You are correct in believing that driving a manual is more efficient that driving an automatic IN MOST CARS. But, yes, your smart is different. Most automatics utilize a torque converter (fluid coupling) to transfer the power from the engine to the transmission. Your smart utilizes a manual clutch that is automatically activated in both manual and automatic mode. Therefore, potentally, fuel economy will be the same in either automatic or manual mode in your smart. In fact, it will probably be better in automatic as the smart's sophisticated sensors and electronics will always be better at slecting the proper gear than a human driver.
Over the 4,800 miles I've had my smart, the worst gas mileage I've gotten is 46.5 and the best is 54.1 (I'm a semi-hypermiler). 90% of this is in automatic mode. I only use manual for fun (it is).
I just got back from a long trip and my Lilly outdid itself!
a) I drove 502.8 miles on a single tank! (still 0.4g left in)
b) Lilly (my Smart) burned 8.276 gallon of gas
MPG: 60.7+ miles per gallon.
This was a long almost 11 hours drive, hills, flats used AC only for a few minutes, kept speed between 45 and 60 mph - but mostly between 50 and 55 mph. Few stop signs (about 10 miles through the cities) and red light stops.
For those curious when the fuel gauge was ticking,
1/8 at 131.5 miles
1/4 at 172.1 miles
3/8 at 222.9 miles
1/2 at 265.7 miles
5/8 at 307.9 miles
3/4 at 375.3 miles
7/8 at 443.8 miles
1.0 gallon left (reserve) at 476 miles
0.4 gallon left at 502.8 miles - my personal best.
I am still in the break in period, and therefor just a bit green, but my best so far with just one fill up and two top ups has been 41mpg. That was just bringing it home avoiding the freeways, driving around town to work and for groceries. A little freeway at 70 with a touch of 80, and in town varies 30 to 45 speed limits. I think, but I'm not sure yet, that it loves to sip while staying under 65, it can do the 70, but while not broken in yet it uses a bit more at high speeds. The number on the sticker for city driving is way too low for my reality, it does much better. I am pretty sure once it sets in I will see an increase in highway driving. It is such a pleasure either on the freeway or off, and no matter what I have seen, it is way, way cheaper to drive than I have enjoyed in several years. You won't care about the mileage, it becomes something you won't worry about when you find your freedom on the roads again. My specialist said I should try to buy the same brand gas, as different companies use different formulas and it helps to stay consistent. I am using 92 octane from Speedway. Don't worry about the premium, it is only pennies and you get much better mileage using it. You will chuckle with glee when you fill it up.
Ok, picked up (Bity) on 8/23. Drove 232 miles from the dealership to home.
Freeway driving 65/75.....I did not baby the little one, wanted to keep up with
traffic. I even was driving with the AC on almost the entire time as the temp.
in Utah was 95 degrees. back to Wyoming and I filled up the tank the next morning.
So with only 345 miles on (Bity) I averaged 42.5 mpg.......I was very happy with that considering I have a P/U that does it's best at 19 mpg.
My first tank was 40.1 and the second was 39.5, so I'm pretty happy, especially considering that the A/C has been on almost continuously during that time. My driving is about 75% highway (in-city at 65 MPH) and I drive in AUTO mode 100%.
Not tracking mine too closely...but first fill up with combination of freeway and city driving and less than 300 miles I got 40. Now at about 1,400 miles and all city and it came in at 47...........I'm happy!
