I have heard of folks upgrading all tire to 195/50 x 15.  Most seem to like how the car handles.  But, how does it change parking and slow speed turning?  Does it take more effort to turn the wheel while stopped? or while moving slow? Have any had any rubbing issues?  If so what brand tires caused or wheel combination? Any front end parts wearing out?  Just trying to make sure I am not causing an other problem fixing the odd tire size on the car.

I've been running 195/50s on 15x6 Rials for over 45,000 miles front and rear. I've used Yokohama AVIDs and currently cheap Primewell PZ900 tires. I have experienced no rubbing even when pushing the car in autocross or on a twisty mountain back road.

 

My car does not have power steering and there was only a slight change in steering effort at low speeds or parking, but I'm a big guy, so the minor difference was inconsequential to me.

 

No issues with parts on the front end so far. I just rotate tires when I change the oil at 7,500 miles or so. The largest direct benefit is in handling, but the ride is also improved with correct tire pressures (26 psi front/32 psi rear). An easier to obtain tire size with more choices is also a great benefit. Aesthetically, I think the car looks much better as well.  And, no real change in MPG either.

Very nice.  My Smart is also black and Red.  Did you keep the tire sensor on the replacement rims?  If not, does it give you an error?

I ordered the rims, tires, and new TPMS sensors from Tire Rack at the same time. They installed the sensors, mounted/balanced the tires, and shipped it to me ready to install (about $975 total for everything including shipping). When I received them, it was just plug and play. The car didn't mind the change to aftermarket sensors since they are compatible. I sold the OEM rims/tires/TPMS complete to other smart owners. After selling the stock setup, it was only about a $350 upgrade. This is probably the best "bang for the buck" upgrade you can make on a stock smart.

Upgrading to wider wheels and tires is a very common upgrade that many, many owners have done and continue to do. When doing so you have many options at all different price points.
