"Chinese product safety authorities have asked German automaker Daimler AG (FRA:DAI) to recall about 50,000 Smart minicars because a belt that powers the vehicle’s cooling fan and alternator could tear, causing the car to overheat and to lose electrical power."

The big question - will 451 smarts in North America be recalled for the same defect?

is our smarts ok are they gonna be recalled is my smart in danger?

No worries....the recall is for the MHD smart that does not come here.

Thanks George was worried about my smart glad to know it is ok thanks!

Correct that the mhd 451 uses a different belt than the non-mhd version.  However, there have been cases of the belt breaking on non-mhd cars in the US, at least one of which resulted in engine meltdown. It's basically a single point failure that will kill the engine if it happens.

According to Daimler, US-based smarts will not be impacted by this recall.
