During the hot summer months the driver's door on my smart will not latch. I have to pull the door handle on the inside and slam the door 2 or 3 times before it will close and latch. I've had it in to two dealerships. One told me the latch was dry and needed to be lubed. That helped for about two weeks. The second told me it was over-lubed and needed to be cleaned. That helped for another two weeks. This has been going on since the Kansas City event in 2010, and seems to be getting worse. This is only the driver's door, not the passenger's door.

Does anyone have any idea what to do about this?

I would take it to a body shop and have them check out your door alignment.

Sounds like it may be the rods inside the door that allow the inside lever to open the door. Might be holding the door latch in the open position (?)

Thnx for both suggestions.  I will be taking the car in soon to replace two panels ( a pickup truck bascking up with the tailgate down hit the back of the parked smart) and will have both these suggestions checked out.
