JUNK smart has no truth!!! they lie or just don't care!!!!!!

I loved smart, bought one of the 1st.  It now has 22,000 miles and because the aircleaner was poorly desinged my engine is trash!!!!Trash dirt scorred the cilinder walls and it runs(badley) on 2 cylinders.  Smart does not make pistons to repair the Trashed  engine  The cure $$12,000 for a new engine or (get this, the home office in NJ said, go to junk yard and mabe buy a used engine)

Tell us more.  How is the air cleaner poorly designed?  How did the dirt get into the engine?  What sort of maintenance schedule has the car been on?  What sort of roads did you normally drive the car on?  Thanks!

I don't know what was wrong with the aircleaner?? But the new smart cars have a different one.  The service manager at La Vista said there is a problem for people that drive on dirt roads.  My smart started  to slow down, called Chris, made an apointment to service(smart has done all servicing)  Lets do the 30,000 early and check the compression when you change the plugs!!  #1--40 psi    #2---130psi     #3--80psi

WHAT DO WE DO it has 22,000miles, never abused!!!  Lets rebuild it,  CAN'T?????   WHY?????  smart doesn't make pistons oversized????

WHAT do we do??????         BUY a new engine for $$12,000??????  nice yellow planter!!!!

The head office in NJ said I might find a used engine in a JUNK yard??  I now see why Rodger got away from this JUNK

Still confused; all the current version of the smart (451 model) have the same air cleaner/airbox setup.  The only change I'm aware of was for the 2009 and later models where they changed the resonator, but that's downstream of the air cleaner/airbox. Several owners have had problems not correctly seating the rear edge of the airbox cover, leaving it open to the elements.  As far as driving on dirt roads, that's considered severe use and should require more frequent service intervals than the normal 10K miles the way I understand it.

I would contact Smartmadness and see what they can do for you.  Someone just shipped in their smart from out of state to have a used engine installed.  If you do decide to rebuild, you can have new pistons made up that are oversize.  Bearings would be more of an issue if the crankshaft is turned undersized.  There is a company that advertises on e-bay that has oversize cylinder liners.  E-bay is also a good place to locate a used engine.  I would check your engine further with a cylinder leakage test to see where the compression losses are occuring.  Guessing and speculation will just add to your confusion.  You need a diagnosis on the condition of your engine and if the engine requires a rebuild, I would look for a used engine.

I'm sorry for your trouble Dennis. You sound devastated. Its good that there are knowledgeable folks on the board that will help. Please keep us informed of the progress on this board as I am not on facebook and would like to hear a happy ending. Would you be able to post some pictures of the parts that failed?

lol @ "roger getting away from this junk"

you know a lot of facts. i'm sure there is nothing else to this story than what you're posting here. sounds legit.

Have you done proper maintenance? When did you change the filter? Do you often drive on dirt roads? Tell us more about how you've driven (or not driven since you only have 22k on there and I assume that it's an 08).  These are pretty strong motors and aren't to many issues with them.

Let me try this

You just bought a$100,000 Corvette.  The engine goes bad, call GM and they say that they do not make parts to rebuild your Corvette,  But they will sell you a new engine for only $90,000

I don't do maintenance, change filters, don't look at the engine.  smartcar does everything,on time, this is my wifes car its cherry, not a thing wrong with it, she loves it.  that why I said rebuild it.  To whitch they said we can't, no parts, but we will sell you a new engine for  $12,000!!!!

We put our smart on a trailer tow 450 miles each way, we love our smart.  Even if they won't let us have the DIESEL??????NOW we have JUNK

Trade it in on a 2013 with a 4 year warranty...

From what I've read online, most dealers are quoting between 6-8k for new engine and labor to replace it. Used engines are reportly going for about 2k or so.

DO you have any other dealers in your area you could get a second opinion?

Hi smartjoemn

I only know what they told me at La Vista Ne.  That a instaled new engine, was $12,000 !! I won't buy USED.

What would be wrong with a used engine?

What option do you have at this point sir? You have a 2008, you are well out of the factory warrantee, I agree the quote you got from the dealer seems steep, however you pay top dollar for a smart tech to install that engine, and the engine isn't going to be cheap from the dealer...

My mom had the block replaced in her Acura TSX and it was over 7k to have just the block replaced by the dealer.
