problems with my smart! owners be on the lookout!

I bought my 09 blue smart passion convertible back in January of 2010 with 6oo miles on it. IT had never been titled , It was used as a marketing display in Arizona.. I love the car but after having the car for only 6 months its been nothing but problems! I need to let everyone who wants or owns a smart My problems with the car! I'm Venting ,yes!

*PROBLEMS*

1- oil leak- had to reseal oil pan

2-water in headlight- replaced headlight

3- door hinge popping- replaced hinge

4-head liner loose- reattached head liner

5 -convertible top leaking when rains- said they fixed it

6-oil leak again- put in dye to find leak and after 45 days in the shop REPLACED MOTOR!!!

7- oil leak again- replaced crank seals

8-oil leak again- tightened oil pan bolts

9- emergency brake not working- adjusted cable

10- radio sounds bad- dealer says it’s a cheap car with a cheap stereo SORRY

Now let me inform you on what still has a problem

1- oil still leaking even after 5 attemps to fix it!

2- convertible top leaking when it rains

3-stereo still sounds awful

4-bumper bolt stripped and rusting due to bad removal, don't know why they would remove the rear bumper but hey Smart had a chevy dealer replace the motor.  The Smart mechanic could not replace it!

Conclusion- SMART USA states as long as it has warranty they will fix it but they have no compassion about my time, gas spent driving to dealership, or my aggravation.........

This is TN lemon laws from the TN gov. site.

Tennessee

-Any motor vehicle not including motorized bicycles, motor homes, recreational vehicles or off-road vehicles and vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVW.

-4 repair attempts or 30 calendar days out of service

Warranty period or 1 year.

I hope something can be done before i can't take it no more and i have to trade the car!

glad to see that you have a good one! I'm not saying that they are all bad but this one is. I just want another one with no problems!

Sorry to hear about your problems.

Yes the radio sucks, Upgrades are easy and cheep, look around.

Lets start at the bottom, Bumper stripped and rusting due to bad removal.

Let me ask you, why was it removed. That is not something that normally gets removed. Unless your talking about the tow Bolt and its hole. If that is the case, why was it even used. Was there a time you had to be towed for any of your problems?

As to the Lemon Law, Usually it's 4 attempts for the same problem, that reading is unclear.

So, even after they replaced the Motor you still have leaking oil?

I have not heard of any leaky tops except under high pressure conditions like a car wash. But I don't have a cabrio so I cant really be objective about it.

40K here with very little issues on my 08

Oh, one more thing, Oil pan bolts should not be that tight, I believe it is something like 30Lb. If they over tighten it, it will leak
It was a Marketing display for Smart in Arizona.

If you got the work order copys, it Sounds like you have a Case... Contact the State Attorney...
Sounds like have had your hands full. I have never dealt with the shops in AZ but had seen some good and some not so good. I think you hold the record for anyone I have every heard of for problems. I had my radio replace, a new clutch and the alarm sensors replaced, with no questions or hassles, under warranty. 23k+ and still rolling like a champ.
it's sad because i love the car. Hopefully something will get done or i'll just have to trade it!
2008 passion with 26K miles here with at least 1/2 of the miles received with 6-8 hrs+ driving per day. I have had a few issues, but none that have not been repaired. Your situation definitely appears to be an anomaly and in my view is not a warranted alarm notice to all smart owners as there has not been a repeat of issues as you have described. Venting and asking for suggestions takes on a totally different perspective.

Sorry to hear you are having a bad experience, but this is not any kind of pattern in general to all smart owners.
Believe me, it could be worse!! Sit down and have a discussion with te dealer's manager and the local smart rep. Bring up the problems and the fixes that have been done, and what still needs to be fixed. Dn't be rude, just state the facts including time you spent, miles driven to and from repairs and time lost if you had to take time off work, etc. If they don't see their way to making you an exceptional deal on a new one, then ask to escaate to smart main office. If that fails, then get in touch with the legal end. I find things usually work better if you exhaust all the avenues before talking about a lawyer.

My dealings with smart on my 08 were quite good. they took care of me and now with my 09, even though it had the trans and clutch issue, I still love the car and would buy another mostly because of the way my problems were handled. (yes, my 08 was the one and ony smart to catch on fire while I was driving down the road)
Venting yes! Anyone who has to take there brand new car to the shop 10 times or more and is without there car 3 out of the six months they owned it would feel they way i do! i love the car and would love a new one but Smart doesn't want to help. I feel completely alone with my problems and as stated in my blog not all are bad but with bad service and a unexperienced dealer mechanic, it could happen to anyone!

Tony, I'm really sorry to hear about all these problems. Sadly, many consumers will sooner or later be stuck in a situation like yours & it's extremely frustrating.

So what problems still remain?

As for the oil leak, the odds of getting two new engines with the same problem is really remote. That is unless it's a manufacturing defect & both engines/pans were from the same lot. But from the numerous forum posts I've read oil leaks do not appear to be a common problem. Sorry to ask, but are you sure they replaced the engine? And for that matter, considering all these problems, are sure this car hasn't been in a wreck & repaired? (You may want to get a carfax or something similar.)
The dealer states that when they fix one leak another starts. Each time time that they have had the car back due to a leak its something completely diff than the time before. They are trying to help but im still very upset with the whole situation. As for a carfax, its clean! I just hope that it gets fixed soon.

Sorry that you're having so many problems with your smart.

Changing out the stereo is easy. Once you change out the head unit, there will be a huge difference. If you do the speakers, another huge difference.

I love my smart, but have to say that it would be very tough to continue to think highly of a car or brand that spends more time in the shop than on the road. Even if it was in a wreck and repaired, I wouldn't think that a properly repaired car would have so many problems, and especially the same problem so many times. If I were in charge of Smart, this sounds like a car I would want off of the road because it is a bad example of the brand and has a lot of potential for bad press.

Have you taken the car to a different mechanic to have it looked over?
