I saw a half dozen cars on the side of I93 Northbound this morning due to issues with this part of the highway that started yesterday.

 

My question: if I get an unexpected flat tire and the tire needs replacing, where do I have AAA tow the car to? The dealer (does Herb Chambers in Somerville stock them?) or to my local tire store?

The dealer usually stocks tire & wheel assemblies.

This is assuming it's beyond repair. Give smartmadness a call, they usually have some lightly used ones available from folks who upgraded to something other than stock.

I remember seeing about 10 cars lined up with flats along 128 once because of something that was dropped onto the road. Boy did that tie up traffic.

And yes, Herb chambers should have them sitting in stock. But its worth a call now just to be sure.
This is what I do:

- I have AAA for the RV service. This provides up to 100miles of Towing.
- I also have a repair kit (plug type and basic tools, pliers to pull out nails, gloves, etc. in the tailgate for me plugging the tire) in addition to the smart provided gunk.

I've had one flat and was able to drive home as it was just a slow leak. The TPMS worked great and I was able to pull it my self. 10,000 miles later I'm still driving on that tire.

I do not have a spare tire or wheel.

The AAA is just back up insurance.

I never felt comfortable without a spare. I got mine from http://www.tirerack.com/

Wheel & tire for about $100.00 (Both were on sale). In fact, I got the tire for $28.00 & wheel for about $70.00. I picked up a scissor jack and keep it in the tailgate compartment with a small assortment of tools. The spare sits behind the seat with room to spare. The spare is a smaller size, and has no TPMS, but it will get me to the shop to have my regular tire repaired.
Speaking of Spare tires. I happen to have two front rims and tires (No TPMS sensors) from a 2009 Smart, that are gathering dust in my garage. Make me an offer on one or both of them (something reasonable though). I live in the Metrowest Area on Mass on 495.
For those who prefer to carry a spare with them, must also consider the problems or tools they must have to change the tire out on the road. Besides having a jack, it must be something that can fit at the jack point (not specified) under the car (the underside is covered in plastic). You should know where these safe jacking points are and how to fit the jack and make sure it will raise the car sufficiently and safely. (doing it will be a learning experience in itself). Secondly, you'll have to have a wrench and socket that will fit (typical X bar wrenches don't have the 15MM size needed for smart wheel bolts). I'd suggest a 'deepwell' socket and a breaker bar to get enuf clearance/leverage to get to the recessed boltheads. Also keep in mind that there is no alignment pin or studs to hold the rim in place while you aim the bolt into the hole so maybe a long tapered rod might be handy to help align up the rim holes while doing this.
I have it all, and everything fits in the tailgate compartment. + an old coat and the MB First Aid kit, which can come in handy.
