I've got my wind up key installed and working! I love it! I added an option to stop the key while the brakes are depressed.

I have a wind up key too. How did you wire it up to the brakes?
I also have a wind up key I think smart cars should come with them standard it just seems to make sense on the car it's my favorite thing about my car now

some ppl are so dumb they think it's hooked straight up to the engine
Todd,

It just bothered me that it kept spinning while I was stopped at a light. What you need is something called a SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) relay. It must be a 12 volt version, and it must be normally closed. The one I purchased from an electronics supply store was less than $6. When power is provided it opens a gate and thus shuts off the apparatus hooked to it. After unsuccessfully trying the brake light (seems it is always powered when lights are on, just more so when you hit the brakes), I hooked into the upper cyclops light. This is easy to get to, as there are just two screws on the light. I cut the wires and hooked into them, then I ran the two wires using a coat hanger, to grab them, through the casing and out the right side. I then removed the weather stripping and tucked them into it. Before any of this I tested the relay to ensure it would open when I tapped the brakes. I then opened up the tailgate and cut the WindUpKey's power line (the thicker one) and hooked it to the relay and then from the relay to the WindUpKey. The relay you get might be different than the one I have, so I'm not sure photos would help, but I'd gladly post them. Where ever you buy the relay, be sure to ask them how to hook it up. I simply tested different connections until I got it right. I didn't really mount the relay inside the tailgate, but rather wrapped it in some foam and tucked it into a cozy spot. Good luck with yours!

Here a photo, and a HD video clip.

Just tried viewing the HD video and I think I'd better upload a non-HD video. So here's that one.

Thank you for the information, video's, etc. I would like to do this when I get some time and it's not so cold outside (Park City is at 7'000 and it's cold in the winter).

Take care, Todd
