Does anyone know if you have to take your car to the dealer for this? Can you do it yourself or take it to your local Jiffy Lube? What must you do to keep your warr?

The owner's manual does not indicate that you must take your Smart to a dealer for an oil change, but it does require certain weighted oil....
Hey Ryan. I suggest using Mobile 0w-40 oil with a wix filter for your oil change. The nice thing about the Smarts is that they don't even need to be put in the air for an oil change. Also, I wouldn't change the oil until 10k miles because the Toyo Roki OEM filter in there will last quite a bit.
Sincerely,
Brett Harrison
Thanks, that is great information from everyone. Do you know if the car comes with an oil change indicator light?
Ryan, I do not believe it comes with an oil change light, but comes with a light next to the odometer that looks like a wrench and I do believe that the light will go on after a specific amount of time. I would call the Smart center, but again, that is my belief.

I check with Pittsburgh on the oil change and it was 155.00 and goes up when you hit 20,000. You can rotate your tires eather, since they are different sizes. I canceled by order due to the high maint. cost. Look at the new honda insight. I can still go back to the Smart since the dealers now have a flood of cars on the lot. Pittsburgh as 15 now. By the way the insight get 40-45 mpg in and out of town. uses reg gas, and change the oil your selft.
USA today had a great story yesterday on the car..
Hi Brad,
I'm still on waiting list for my Smart, but have started doing research on maintainence.
I just got off the phone with Smart, and the first oil change is not due til 10,000 miles
or 1 year, whichever comes first. I asked her why so long and not 3,000 like all others.
Becaue of the special filter and oil the car runs on (and a bunch of mechanical jargon
I didn't quite make out lol).

They change the cabin filter, oil filter and some other filter also. However, they check the car from top to bottom just like they do when it comes off the boat. If you pay about $30 for each 3,000 oil
change in a regular car, it's $120. a year. ok, maybe a little less at Jiffy or EZLube with a
coupon, but they don't know what they're doing with this new brand of car. So you pay $30 more a year for an oil change on a Smart, and you essentially get a tuneup check to boot. Money well spent in my opinion :)
Hope this helps,
Red
But it's not CUTE

yes, and it starts at double the sticker than a smart--hmm. and smarts are retaining their value just like hondas.

The odometer tells you when you need an oil chabge, but it has to be reset after the service
