The August 2008 Consumers Reports magazine had a "First Look" at the Smart ForTwo. The reviewer used some poorly chosen words to describe a few of his opinions, so I took exception with the following eMail:

I read with interest your First Look of the New Smart ForTwo (August 2008). Happily, I am an owner of this most unusual car. While your reviewer made some good observations (the ride is horrendous), he also made some judgments which are both nonobjective and downright… Continue

Thank you very much for the message! We hope to bring Green printing to a new level through our company and it is always nice to meet with like-minded people. If I am ever in Florida I will definitely send you an email to meet up and I invite you to do the same if you are in New York.

Thanks again for the comment and have a great day,
Chris

The operation of the transmission is a unique experience. In automatic mode, the computer controls the clutch and overrides the accelerator during gear shifts. This admittedly different operation is an important reason this gasolene-only car gets near hybrid fuel consumption. The pause during upshifts takes some getting used to, but the description “shifts in an uncomfortable way, with pauses and heaves” sounds like you should take Dramamine before entering. I expect CR to be objective in expressing opinion, but sarcasm seems out of place. And is the reviewer so jaded that he has forgotten what makes a car fun to drive?

What really raised my eyebrows was the implication that this car is not an intelligent choice. Ouch, have I really made such a stupid purchase? On the contrary, I suggest that such derisive language is beneath CR objectivity. It would have been less insulting to say “a more practical choice than the Smart would be” . . , and almost any car mentioned would have been correct!

And, is it really true that intelligent people should prefer an ordinary, undistinguished, practical little car over the Smart? Frankly, as impractical as it is, the Smart is in a class by itself. It towers over other small cars by being simply adorable, an automotive sculptural masterpiece that delivers personal transportation for two in a fun-to-drive package offering hybrid-like fuel consumption at half the price. Go figure.
