Hi Walt,  We had all the work done in Mesa Arizona at a place called Robert Christ RV.  I think they routed the break away wire along with the connection wires when they did the installation.  We are not mechanically inclined…

Towing Smart

Posted on August 12, 2010 at 11:13am 0 Comments

Hi I recently had an inquiry about towing the Smart Car. We tow ours behind our Winnebago Via (26 ft motorhome) If you follow the instructions in the revised Smart Car manual, it is so easy. Make sure you go to a dealer that is familiar with Smart Cars for the installation. We have a Blue Ox towing system with the Patriot braking system. To be legal in all states and Canada, you DO have to have a breaking system. If you are ever in an accident, even if it was not your fault, you will be charged… Continue

TOWING SMART CAR BEHIND MOTORHOME USING A SUPPLEMENTAL BRAKING SYSTEM

Posted on February 26, 2010 at 12:13pm 5 Comments

We will be installing a Blue Ox towing system and the blue ox Patriot braking system. If I use a battery disconnect per the manual then I would need to install another 12volt outlet and have it connected directly to the battery so I can plug in the brake system.
Any suggestions and/or feedback would be appreciated. THANKS…

towing the smart behind a motor home

Posted on January 27, 2010 at 6:17pm 4 Comments

We just downsized and bought a Winnebago Via class A motor home. It is 26 feet long and will tow our Smart Car with no problems. We are looking for a dealer that has installed the base plate (either Blue-Ox or Roadmaster as they both have baseplates for Smart) on a Smart Car before. We are in Tucson , Arizona and it seems no one here has done a base plate on a Smart before. Also what are the steps to take in getting Smart ready to tow? Shift into neutral and disconnect the battery? Is that all?… Continue

Back from 4 month RV trip

Posted on October 18, 2008 at 12:23pm 2 Comments

Hi all you Smarties out there. Just a quick note if you have to leave your Smart sit for a while. We went on a 4 month RV trip with our motor home and left my Smart at home since we have not installed a tow package yet. I hooked the Smart up to a battery minder(not too hard to do, but you have to remove the passenger side floor to get to the battery) and put a bottle of Sta-Bil into the full gas tank. On our arrival home, I disconnected the battery minder and little Smart started right up. I… Continue

Fran,

Thanks for the reply. Looks like that's the way I'll go, too. How did you route the wire for the break-away switch? Do you just go through the window/door, or did you route it into the cockpit via the front "hood" area?

Thanks, again,
Walt
