About Me
I AM 65 YEARS OF AGE AND MY WIFE, JACKIE IS 56. WE ARE ACTIVE IN AUTOMOTIVE MERCHANDISING. I DO CAR SHOWS, AND UNFORTUNATELY SHE HAS TO REMAIN HOME TO CARE FOR MY MOTHER. WE ARE VERY ANXIOUS TO BE ON THE ROAD TOGETHER AGAIN. VERY ANXIOUS, I MIGHT ADD.
My smart's name
"MY SMART CAR"

SMART IS GONE :-(

SAD TO SAY, MY SMART IS NO MORE. I WAS FORCED TO SELL. i NEEDED TO PURCHASE A VAN AND REALLY COULD NOT AFFORD THE INSURANCE ON YET ANOTHER VEHICLE. I DO HAVE THE TRAILER I CONSTRUCTED FOR THE SMART FOR SALE. I PAINTED THE TOP TO MATCH MY SMART, BUT ANYONE COULD DO THE SAME. I AM SELLING THIS AS IS, AND WHERE IS. IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH SOME MINOR SCRATCHES HERE AND THERE. IT HAS CURRENT REGISTRATION THAT IS GOOD FOR ALMOST A YEAR. THE TRAILER WEIGHS 150# AND I HAVE TOWED AS MUCH AS 400# IN THE TRAILER. MY WIFE AND I USED THIS TO HAUL CHRISTMAS PRESENTS AND OUR LUGGAGE. THE REAR AREA WAS TAKEN UP BY OUR DOGS. IT TOWS FINE AND I DO HAVE A HITCH AVAILABLE THAT ONLY REQUIRES YOU TO REMOVE THE TWO PLUGS ON EITHER SIDE IN THE REAR. THE HITCH BOLTS DIRECTLY INTO THE FRAME, AND I HAVE EVERYTHING NECESSARY TO HOOK IT UP AND SEND YOU ON YOUR WAY. I WILL SELL TRAILER ALONE FOR $900, TRAILER AND HITCH $1,000. Dust Protectors

Posted on December 21, 2008 at 9:36am 3 Comments

I am curious is anyone has located anyone selling the "dust protectors" for the smart wheels. I worked on Mercedes Benz for a number of years and this was a VERY popular addition to keep the brake dust from staining the aluminum wheels. I believe, if someone produces these, they could be used on the front to keep the dust of the wheels, like intended and on the rear to cover the brake drum. The rear would be strictly cosmetic. If no one produces these commercially I may have to just make my… Continue

TRANSPORTS FULL OF SMART CARS

Posted on October 20, 2008 at 10:58pm 0 Comments

While traveling today on IH 10 I saw not one, not two, but THREE transports full of smart cars. They were all headed west so folks in Louisiana and Alabama should be getting their cars soon. They looked so small on the truck and trailer. All the colors made me think of an Easter basket. I was meeting the transports and did not get a chance to count the number of smart cars will fit on one "load". That would be interesting to know. They just looked "cute" sitting up there with the smile on their… Continue

Brian,

Thanks for your comments on the choice Hutch and I have had to take, :-(. If you take my phone number, 1-800-597-1934 and phone me Monday or Tuesday, I can let you know if I still have the trailer or not. I had a man with a motorcycle show an interest in it to tow behind his bike. I have been out of town for a couple of days and have been unavailable for him to contact me.

I do have the hitch, and it was not included in the sale, but will sell it reasonably. They hitch would include the two special bolts to attach it to the smart along with the wiring harness I made up for it. I also have the receiver with the drop to work well with the smart, too.

Wiring is a simple procedure to connect to the smart as well. The trailer is currently in San Antonio, TX. Where are you located?
Awaiting your call.

Jim,

I am sorry to see your no longer a smart owner. I had e-mailed with Hutch Hutchison about his no longer being an owner too.

I also noticed that you had offered Hutch your trailer and hitch and he of course no longer needs it. I would be interested in getting it for myself if it is still available. I am more interested in the hitch than the trailer but if it is a package deal I can still do it. What is the price (Hutch mentioned you were at $900)? Do you have any wiring set or at least some guidance for the connecting the smart up to the trailer?

I hope you and Hutch can someday return to smart ownership.

Hi Jim, Well, I sold my Smart Car too!!! We have 14 miles of dirt road that can turn muddy in the winter we have found out, and when it is dry it is riddled with ruts and potholes We traded ours in Friday for a Nissan Frontier 4x4 Pickup and this will give us the confidence of being able to safely get to work or wherever we are going.....so am glad I waited on the trailer...but am hoping you sold it. Keep my number handy 719-290-1211 cell when you come to Pueblo, will make the drive over and meet you and will be fun to attend the Hot Rod show as well..blessings...hutch

HEY HUTCH, I UNDERSTAND COMPLETLY. NO ONE LOVED THE smart MORE THAN MYSELF. I WANTED ONE THE FIRST TIME I LAID EYES ON IT IN CANADA. AT THAT TIME IT WAS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE STATES. AS SOON AS THEY WERE, I WAS ON THE LIST. I WAS IN THE FIRST BATCH TO RECEIVE THEM HERE. I COULD HAVE SOLD MINE AND MADE MYSELF GOOD MONEY, BUT I WOULD NOT DO IT. IT WAS KIND OF LIKE SELLING YOUR "FIRST BORN". NOW THE ECONOMY IS WHAT IS FORCING MY CHOICES. MY WIFE AND I SAT DOWN AND WENT THROUGH WHAT WE "NEEDED" AND WHAT WE "WANTED". THE smart FELL INTO THE WANT LIST. WE WERE FORCED TO DOWNSIZE OUT BUSINESS AND THAT IS WHY WE WENT WITH THE NEW FORD TRANSIT VAN. IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WITH YOUR smart CONNECTIONS THAT WOULD BE INTERESTED IN A TRAILER THAT "WORKS" GIVE THEM A WAY TO GET INTO CONTACT WITH ME IF YOU WOULD NOT MIND. ALSO, WHEN THE CAR SHOW COMES TO PUEBLO, GIVE ME A PHONE CALL 1-800-597-1934. I CAN GET YOU AND YOUR WIFE SOME PASSES TO GET IN IF YOU WOULD LIKE. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING YOU. JIM

Even a tougher decision now! It rained about a half inch on Wednesday then snowed about 5 inches at our house Wednesday. I drove that road again Thursday morning and the top two inches of it was pure mud. They put Magnesium Chloride on it in the summer to keep dust down and weeds, but it turns it into a mud rink in the winter. 20mph tops and my car was slipping through the mud all the way. even thought about turning around but had such a big day at work I couldn't. It is a shame 7 miles are making my decision, but this little car even in the good weather bounces around pretty good on this dirt road with potholes and such. County roads are just that....and Smarts really are meant for the bigger cities. Thanks for the update on price. I am looking at a Subaru Outback and a Nissan Frontier pickup. Both 4x4. First offer on Subaru they wanted to give me $11k for the Smart, The Subaru is about $1,500 under retail, so they are close to making a deal. Just don't know if I want to go pickup or not...I hate to lose the gas mileage! 54 mpg last fillup. As you can see, still have some thinking to do. I would need everything, so your $1,000 again is a sweet deal. I was at dealer and withheld purchasing snow tires, thinking they would be great for the mud/snow. I don't want to spend the $530 even on that until I make my decsion. HEre is another photo. This is the snow on the ground when we got home Wednesday night. Melted next day, but is what made the road so bad. Stay in touch! Will let you know what I do. I was looking at the Fiat 500 a couple of years ago that they have over in Europe, but have not heard of the 850?

Hi Jim, In talking to the wife, the only concern she had, which is vailid, is we don't know if we are going to have this car a year from now. We hope too! But we just moved out in the country and live on 35 acres. We are 40 miles southwest of Colorado Springs and we travel 7 miles of hard packed earth/gravel everyday...twice! And, we had our first snow, cold rain two weeks ago and the little car made it, but it is a very slippery road. We haven't been through a winter yet with it out here. We have a Jeep Commander as our second car, but we may want a Subaru Outback or something for our main vehicle. 4 wheel drive is kinda important in Colorado and out where we live. Your price is awesome! I would love to meet you. When you come out to Pueblo ( we were there yesterday shopping as it is 38 miles away ) in June for the Hot Rod show, let me know!!!! Thanks so much. I included a photo. Don't know if it will show up in here or not. Hutch

MJB, I have found it stange how we ALL have made our "little" friend into a person more than the mechanical thing they are. I have owned street rods that I spent many, many dollars and hours to create and THEY WERE never thought of as I do, or did, my smart. I have loved the little car since first seeing one in Canada. I will stick to your plan for the the day that I CAN purchase another one. Now I have to hope that I last that long. Constant worries in these troubled times it seems.
Thanks for the post

OMG, I'm very sad to hear that you had to give up your gorgeous blue smartie, It was a strange feeling that hit me as I read your post, amongst all those folks who love their SCs and the one that regrets his decision to own one. Truly, a sad day. If it was me I'd just park it in the garage for 'someday', but I know what it's like to have a car for every day of the week and the insurance on them all, it's a heavy load.

Let's hope that sometime in the future you will be able to liquidate all those others and get a new ED smart, maybe in 2012 or beyond.

Hi Jim! I will give you a call today. I have been travelling a bunch and will be a crazy day today, but would like to chat with you about it. We do have some other priorities in our budget, but I guess if it is a "Deal I can't refuse" I will at least think about it! :) Might be mid afternoon before I get the call made. Worst case tomorrow. Thank you so much for thinking of me first! And please, don't "hold it" until tomororw if you have someone else that wants it. I will be in touch. Hutch

Hutch, It is funny you mention the show in Pueblo, THAT is what I do. I attend all the shows around the country. I usually do the Pueblo show, too. Next year, before the event, give me a shout and I will obtain you a couple of passes to come to the show if you would like. On the trailer, I imagine that I am just going to "drop" my plans for the trailers. I imagine by now the "big:" boys will be in ont that one. I was just trying to come up with a nice trailer that was also affordable. I have actually built a couple for a few friends with motorcycles. I know that there is a trailer vendor that usually comes to the shows, but his price is out of sight. I have spoken to him, and he just does not seem to understand what it is people are wanting. A small, light, easy to tow trailer to pull behind a bike or vehicle that has limited storage space. They always want to make them with all these bells and whistles that drive the price so high people are not going ot purchase them.
Keep in touch, Hutch on the show if you would like to attend next year. I would look forward to meeting you as well.
Jim
