I work for Apple, Inc. My job title is Genius... it's just a job title. I do technical support for Apple and repair Macs. I served 7 years in the USAF and have a double degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. I got my SMART sooner then expected because someone that had an order in almost identical to mine canceled. Otherwise I would be waiting until April or June 2009.

Reserved my SMART in February 4, 2008, got invite to do final configuration this week and did it August 28, 2008 (close to 7 months), the DDE says April - June 2009 (assuming best case from reservation to estimated delivery) that's 14 months.
Somehow my dealer, when I placed the reservation, did not tell me that the time it would take to get an invite to do a final configuration would be 1/2 the time I would have to wait. Somehow it seems to me that 7 months lead time on a FINAL car configuration is a lot to time of manufacture and delivery. Ninety days I can believe but 7 months?
Somehow, based on the marginal advantages the car offers in fuel savings (other small cars come very close to it and they are bigger cars) and the expensive and inconvenient nature of a simple oil change don't justify the very long time to get what is really just a normal 100% oil fueled car.
I love the car. I want the car. I love the concept and the idea of having what is almost a Segway with a roof, sound system and air conditioning.
But in the end, just being a pragmatic consumer, I'm not convinced the benefits (putting the novelty aside) are worth all the time it takes to get one.
Anyone have any observations or countervailing information on this?
I'm a bit disappointed and really honestly considering an alternative.
