"I'm in your boat. Have a 2009 and at the 50K service was told I needed transmission work.  $500+ in repairs on a transmission with 50K miles just seems ridiculous.  I called smart to log a complaint, and of course registered similar…"

Transmission leaking at 50K miles?

Just want to log my complaint from my recent 50K service. I've owned my smartcar since December 2008, ordering it in March of 08 and actually getting an 09 model within 9 months. I've had the smart dealer in Chandler, AZ service it every 10K miles. Except for the time I backed into my trash can and broke a rear light, or when I broke the hatch latch by putting a box in and catching it, I've had no issues at all. Yesterday I took it in for the 50K service, and was told my transmission seals were…See More

"I've had mine for 2 1/2 years, just getting very close to 50K miles.  Since it's a commuter, I've had a windshield replaced.  I also broke one of the latches to lower the rear gate (bad design imho, when loading in through…"

"I've just finished 30K miles on my passion, delivered in Dec 08. One of the most overlooked features of the smart is the price. I always hear hybrid owners comment on how they get better mileage than me (40.8 mpg for the first 30K miles). I…"

tire sensor set off by a car wash?

Posted on August 4, 2009 at 8:10pm 5 Comments

had this happen to me today. Kinda standard car wash (and I've been through this one before). After the blower dried the car, I noticed the tire pressure sensor light on. Got back to the office and all tires and caps looked normal. I reset the sensor, and will drive it shortly (and let you know if it goes off again).

anyone else had this happen?

6 months, 10,000 miles, and my first service

Posted on July 2, 2009 at 6:07pm 1 Comment

Called yesterday, got an appointment today no problems. $158.80 was the total 10K service, changed the A/C filter inside, took about 90 minutes.

Best part: they practically detailed the car in the process. Looked showroom clean inside and out. Great experience (and free wi-fi too).

Being someone who's regularly spends $30 for a 3K oil change, spending $158 seemed steep. But, probably about the same in the long run given the twice a year schedule (instead of 7 times a… Continue

Completed my first tank of gas, and my first sales pitch

Posted on December 29, 2008 at 2:38pm 4 Comments

It only took my 5 days to burn through the first tank in my smart car. However, that was a lot of driving through the freeway system in and around Phoenix, AZ. First tank results = 42.3 mpg. I'll take it. Beat by more than twice what my other daily driver was doing. I purchased Gas Cubby for my iPhone, so I'll have a really solid accounting of mileage, etc, etc.

Yesterday I took it down to Fashion Square Mall in Scottsdale to scoop up some after Christmas goodies. Once parked in the… Continue

Drove home in the rain

Posted on December 22, 2008 at 11:41pm 0 Comments

On day two of ownership, I had the opportunity (rare) to drive an hour in the rain from Tempe to Cave Creek, AZ. The smart car was amazing. It handled well, loved how much of the windshield was kept clean by the wipers, and cornering/puddle jumping was no problem at all. For such a small, inexpensive vehicle, having anti-lock brakes, traction control, intermittent wipers, plus a cabin that's roomy and comfy with temperature control seems to be unheard of.

A drive that would normally… Continue
