My favorite things about smart
Easy on petrol as it gets 49/50MPG on the road and 34/35MPG in town (unless I keep the pedal floored), excellent transportation...worth the wait to get it.
About Me
Photographer-at-large, but I have a 9 to 5 to cover expenses. Travel often, saw my first Smart Car in Paris in 1999. The Smart I own is not what I initially ordered, we adopted an Orphan when the dealer was kind enough to call and ask if we were interested. That was awesome!
My smart's name
The Lost Skate

Had my 10K service combined with the 2.0 upgrade, Holy Cow, what a difference! 49mpg on the 160 mile drive home this afternoon, and I'm stunned over the way the transmission paddle shifts now... The Lost Skate is a year old now, no regrets that's for sure!

Windshield Replacement

The Lost Skate took a stone hit in San Diego last Monday in a violent rainstorm... I learned a few things about Smart glass and happiness is not having the rain sensor with regard to price, holy-cow! Safelite online was as easy as it gets and the PPG glass they installed was tip-top in quality. I do have a caution to share if you've not had the pleasure of replacing the windshield: Be sure the technician insulates the pivot screw on his right angle knife as it will scratch the window post. I've… Continue

Soft Top Protection

What do folks use to protect the material on our Cab's top? This is my first experience with a soft top and I live in a very UV harsh environment... Any thoughts or suggestions??

First Repair

Posted on September 19, 2008 at 8:42pm 2 Comments

Well Smart Fans...at 3250 miles I had my first repair made on the Lost Skate, a small sensor in the secondary air system. The Check Engine light illuminated steady about a hundred miles back so I called for an appointment. Scheduling was easy at the dealer in Riverside, CA. (Walter's Mercedes) and the experience was good but a bit unusual.

I did insist on an oil change, living in the desert where even the best filtration is suspect, they thought I was nuts. I've grown up on oil… Continue

Hello Mike
I would like to know what year is your Smartcar that you had the 2.0 Transmission upgrade. I have a 2009 and wondering if that year requires an upgrade. Thanks

Thanks, Mike. I'm having a blast with this car. If you ever get yours back to Cleveland drop me a comment. Maybe we can get together and swap stories. You have a great New Year too.

The HAARTZ Corporation and Rode & Schwalenbert Gmbh. (Germany) are the world's leading manufacturers of convertible topping for virtually every American and European convertible automobile manufactured throughout the world, and they exclusively recommend using RaggTopp Cleaners and Protectants to preserve their convertible tops.

If you do a web search you can find lots of dealers that carry these products. I did find prices varied widely so check around.
