Varying gas mileage

My Passion coupe has about 40,000 miles on it now. Our weather in NC has been consistently over 95 since mid May, and my gas mileage has dropped from a steady 40-41 mpg for my regular driving to around 36mpg. I realize the air conditioning has an effect, but it has never been this severe. I have clean oil, and a clean air filter. Has anyone else noticed abnormally bad mileage in very hot weather? Thanks.

I adopted a Passion Coupe in June, and have enjoyed the entire experience. My rally red cab is due at the end of November. It's entertaining to talk to people about the car, and see their expressions when they encounter me on the road. I love the reactions friends have when they ride in the car - "it's not a cracker box, it doesn't feel small in here, it's got leather, you can get two sets of clubs in here," etc. Everyone I have encountered has been impressed, or at least amused by the car.
