I'm a brand new Smart owner. Bought a used ForTwo with only 1K miles. Having never drove a Smart, is this normal or do I need this looked at?When I start the car & begin moving I hear a couple…Continue

"Mmhmm.... So what you're saying is service is expensive as hell if you're at a dealership that goes way over the top to provide things you don't really need to have at a dealership? Smart Center Trevose... which is part of the…"

"Funny. How can the ABS test fail and not let the car go into gear... when the only time it ever does the self-test is when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd after you're already moving? And... "Saving money owning a Smart is a joke."?…"

"I'm no mechanic, but really!?! It's a block, a gasket, a pan, & some bolts. How can it continue to leak especially when it's a supposedly brand new engine??? This is not rocket science. One of these four elements is causing the…"

"Tony, I'm really sorry to hear about all these problems. Sadly, many consumers will sooner or later be stuck in a situation like yours & it's extremely frustrating. So what problems still remain? As for the oil leak, the odds of…"

"I'm kind of a bland minimalist design-wise, so I really like the black & white. (My car is a stock black Passion.) But of course the red looks great, too. And from your video you must have put a ton of miles on your car! (Very nice video,…"

"Nice car--okay, maybe not so much the wind-up key ; ) I really like the achromatic color scheme & the Rials look great, even better than I thought. If I don't find a stock rear pair of wheels soon, I'm definitely buying the…"

"Yep. Good idea! I wish there were more tire & rim combos to choose from. Oh well. And yeah, I saw the eBay auctions, too. Ouch! : ) Thanks. "

"FYI, just spoke with a rep at tirerack.com & he said 175s will not fit the stock front 4.5" rims. According to him, 5" rims are the minimum. Looks like I need to buy some rims!"

"Intuitively the extra weight does sound beneficial for stickiness & tracking (not mpg). There's a large section of highway I drive each day that has been repaved & it's very smooth. I noticed the ride was, as you would expect,…"

"Great info. Thanks all! So the 175s sound like a good compromise. Fred, 1010tires.com tire calculator specs 4.5"-6" rims for the 175s. I also recall someone posted in a forum about mounting 175s on his 4.5" & didn't report…"

"Thanks for the input, Fred. So you went with 175s, not 195s? Then maybe I should go that route, because I think the 175s will just barely fit the small stock front rims. But where did you buy your Rials? Thanks!"

Anything going on?

Darn, I'm late to the game & would have loved to have gone to KC, but now that I have my Smart, are there any local Smart activities happening? What about good local resources for servicing/customizing Smarts? Thanks!!!See More

My favorite things about smart
Mileage (though it should be better). Styling, of course. It's only tiny from the outside--inside it feels like a typical sized car. Fun, quirky, & cute.
About Me
Nerd. Independent. Critical thinker. Overly self-responsible. Appreciative of seemingly simple things.
My smart's name
Ummm, how about 'Lexi'.

I have a work van that I drive every day. I ride a Motorcycle every chance I get and use the smart all the other times. It goes nice in the winter, etc. I have not had any problems in any kind of weather. I have driven to Chicago, Wisconsin Dells, Kansas City, South Carolina, etc. I'm not sure how you are going to use yours, but I can assure you that you won't have to worry about the car in any kind of weather. I'm not sure if you are aware but the higher profile not only gives you a better view of the road, raises you above a lot of the impact energy in a side collission but also gives you more clearance in snow than say a sports car or even a Mini.

Hey John, welcome to the world of smart. I think you'll find it quite enjoyable. I noticed you mentioned that you thought mileage might be better. I've had my smart for over 18 months and i get my best mileage out of the St. Louis area. I blame it on our gas mixture here. I can tell you that the higher octane rating seems to yield the best mileage.

Anyway, enjoy your car... it's a lot of fun!
