The Highland Park Police Department obtained the 2009 Mercedes Smart for Two car to replace all-terrain cycles that our Community Service Officers were using for parking enforcement and community service activities. The Smart for Two car offers increased weather protection, accident protection and an increased service range in our City which is twelve square miles. Traffic Unit staff researched replacement vehicles and chose the Smart for Two car due to its small size, fuel efficiency, features, storage and adaptability to community service officer requirements. Traffic Unit staff and our department mechanic selected vehicle graphics that matched or mirrored our department’s squad car for uniformity and citizen recognition. A high output LED light bar was added to increase visibility and increase safety for the Community Service Officers. This vehicle is ideal for use in our Central Business District and is useful in promoting the City’s “Green Initiatives” program which promotes fuel efficient vehicles and efforts to minimize impact on our environment. Feedback from citizens (and Children) has been positive in reference to the vehicle as no other municipality (to our knowledge) uses the Smart for Two car for Community Service. Children can relate to the whimsical looks of the vehicle and the vehicle has been good for fostering community relations. The Police Department will obtain two more Smart for Two cars which will be designated and marked as Community Service vehicles in fiscal years 2010 and 2011.
