smart electric drive Makes List of Top 7 Most Affordable Electric Vehicles

In case you missed it: Autos Cheat Sheet recently gave the electric drive the #1 spot on their list of the most affordable electric vehicles currently on the market. They awarded this distinction based on the following: the vehicles had to be available for sale, not just lease; they had to be offered nationwide for purchase; and the overall affordability factor was rated based on the manufacturer's suggested retail price after a federal tax credit but before any state or local incentives. It's great to see that our electric drive is saving owners money all over the country! http://smart.cr/1oCaFODSee More

Virginia smart car Parking Gets Props

Good ol' Virginia, keeping us on our toes. A local smart owner caused quite a stir when he parked his vehicle sideways on a residential street. A neighbor took a photo of the park job and posted it online, where it immediately went viral. It was later determined that the smart's location did not allow for "angle parking" — however, local police gave the driver "an A for effort." http://smart.cr/1tY7dlxSee More

Chicago Launches 'Drive Electric Chicago' Website

Calling all Chi-town electric drive owners: according to Mayor Rahm Emanuel, you are all model citizens. Emanuel loves electric vehicles so much that he has launched a website, Drive Electric Chicago, to better serve your illustrious community. Drive Electric Chicago is a "one-stop shop" for all things electric: facts, stats, local incentives and rebates. Emanuel says that he believes the campaign will impact the city in a big way, since going electric is better for both the environment and your bank account.See More

electric Drive Charging Etiquette

Posted on July 10, 2014 at 2:33pm 1 Comment

We are thrilled that so many people have made the switch to electric. With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles comes fresh opportunities to innovate and redefine the rules of the road.

One etiquette inquiry that has popped up on a lot on forums is "charge rage." A member of smart car of America recently wrote, "This week, for the first time, I unplugged…

The Scoop: smart cities project

Posted on May 2, 2014 at 10:00am 6 Comments

Hi smartsters,

I’m Julia Knittel, and over the past year I have been working on a new project called “smart cities,” which tests out some new things for smart in various cities around the world.

First of all, what is the smart cities project? The Head of smart global, Dr. Annette Winkler, was inspired when she noticed that certain cities around the world (think of Paris and Rome, for example) had overwhelmingly adopted smart into their culture, to the extent that she often saw…

Let me second Robert's comment.  Not sure what happened but smart USA appears to be totally disconnected from the smart owner community. Yes, there's Farcebook (pun intended) but that's pretty much generic comments without much substance.  Bring back the un-group in anticipation of the 2015 intro of the next generation smarts!

I have a comment about seeing the un-group revitalized here. Eric Angeloro did a fantastic job of organizing the un-group and without his input the group has struggled on Google Hangout. It has now become apparent that the group can no longer continue without the input from smartUSA. There is still a lot of passion and enthusiasm amongst smart owners and to have the involvement of smartUSA to communicate with a group of committed owners seems like a plus for promoting the brand. Hopefully, Eric or someone else in corporate will take up the challenge to bring the un-group back to life and instill a continued enthusiasm for the brand, amongst it's owners.

Funny, funny, Charlotte!  Before we got our little Munchkin, Ann and I lived on the Bolivar Peninsula, a ferry ride from Galveston, Texas, until we were moved away by hurricane Ike.  Cars going onto the ferry had a TSA-like inspection before boarding.  "Pop the hood, pop the trunk and pop the glove box."  We may drive all the way back down there just to have an experience like yours.  We are all primed to respond, "Sorry, we don't have the first two, but we can open the glove box for you."

On the other hand, the third member of the inspection team used a long-handled mirror to inspect the bottom of cars.  I guess it would not be so funny if we were instructed to remove Munchkin's under tray.  :)

Hello sUSAi:

Yes, I am interested in sharing my photos as well as my little story.  I can't tell you how much attention my SmartCar got.  It was especially funny when the security detail searching vehicles and their contents asked me to "Pop the trunk."  After the look on my face, they just laughed.  You certainly can fit a lot of stuff in this car!  How do I get to you my photos?  Charlotte Rios
