I took a day trip to the west coast today. After filling up for the first time at an amazing $32.74 for 8.3 gallons of 92 octane, I plotted my TomTom to take me to Saugatuk by freeway, 94 miles one way. I did my freeway with a fair amount of ease, it took a bit of adjustment to get used to the wind and the gawking maneuvers of some of the other vehicles, but it was pure joy. I got to the park just in time to get some pictures of the lake as it started to sprinkle, and when I got back to the car… Continue

I purchased the comfort package with my smart and therefor got the power steering. I really love it. It disables itself at high speed so it is only really noticeable when I maneuver in tight areas, which really helps in some of those tiny, odd parking spots close to curbs.

Still having a LOT of fun with SunnyD. Who was asking about funny parking stories? I sure have one. After a dr appointment the other day, I returned to work. I decided to back into a parking space. I parked, decided I was too close to the line on the left, so pulled forward and re-parked. Satisfied, I got out of the car, ready to lock, but found I was parked cater-corner in the lines! Thinking to myself, "now I KNOW I'm senile". So got back in the car, pulled forward, and re-positioned the car… Continue

Dear fellow smarties,
We all appreciate how nimble and easy to park our smarts are, but I have yet to hear (let alone see) of any initiatives or special parking spaces specifically provided for smart people in the US.
I am curious to know whether any of you have started such efforts or know someone who has and what advice my stem from that?

As I was waiting at the car-wash the other day and silently contemplating in my mind that I had to pay the same to get my smart washed while there clearly is only about half as much car to clean I also remembered my first attempt driving through an automated carwash where the rear barely got hit by water and the passenger side was pretty far away from the nozzles while the poor computer was re-calibrating every few seconds. Now: The 60 second dryer worked wonderfully (I didn't even need the… Continue

I have almost always driven a standard vehicle. I am a little nervous about the paddle shifters. Any suggestions. And do you get better gas milage while using them or the automatic way. I haven't received my smart yet. Can't wait!!!

This week has been a lot of fun for a lot of people. Some business contacts have been coming in to the office that I haven't seen in a long time, so I am giving test drives before they have their meetings. I am also posting my first photo today. The stuffed toy is a thing we all did when the Aztek was new, and mine still matches the car. I worked at a Goodwill and the retail staff gave me the toy which is supposed to be a baby eagle.
I actually had a woman chase me down yesterday… Continue

Aaah, Kitty is wonderful. My friends have all gotten a kick out of checking out the car. As small as the car is, to me it seems large -- since it sits so much higher than my previous car (a Mustang) and many other cars, I almost feel like I'm driving an SUV! Continue

Here's a new chuckle for ya: I got my license plate yesterday. I live in NM, but didn't get the vanity plate, because I'm going to have SunnyD's name decaled on my car. The regular NM license plate is bright yellow, exactly the same color as my car, and the red letters & numbers match the brake lights !!!!! Isn't it nice to have everything matching? Continue

I am amazed with my new Smart. It is such a fun car to drive. I picked it up on the 20th of August and I drove it to work the next day. It took me nearly an hour to walk from the parking lot to my office just from answering questions and responding to comments. People seem to love it. Who says that a car can't be practical, affordable, AND fun. I work at a small community college in upstate New York and I drove past a group of students with the car. You should have heard them! They were tickled… Continue

Now that I finally have my smart, I have to use the word shocking as my description for it in one word. Everything about it is a surprise that just doesn't go away for a long time. I had to drive through the campus of Michigan State on my way home yesterday, just as all the students are arriving into town. Yes, I had to stop at a crosswalk in the front row, and a group of students were crossing the street, and yes, one of them was grinning from ear to ear and staring and staring until he walked… Continue

WOW! I decided to check out this site again after taking about a week off from it. I just got tired of everything being dominated by LeLapinBlanc. But then again I could be just dreaming. It sure is pleasant to be on here and read everyones blogs and comments without his ranting and raving about his dealer and the "THE GREAT ORPHAN CONSPIRACY".

I called twice and both times they say your approximate wait time is 5 minutes and then you are instantaneously connected to a rep when you wait 5 more seconds. Then wait, you ask the rep for your delivery date, they say they cannot tell you that! Then you ask...can you get a very approximate date since I have already configured the car? Cannot help there either!
But this gets better...you tell them "Well, a lot of folks will be inclined to cancel if they cannot even get an approximate… Continue

We picked our Smart up on Sunday after an unbelievable short wait of 9 weeks!. Anyway, when we were at the dealership I asked what changes are being made to the Smart in the 2009 model. Apparently the only changes being made are that the yellow & red colors are being retired. The current red is being reolaced by a darker red. Thats all. Nothing mechanical, apperance is the same, nothing being added. If you have yellow or red, take care of it as it will be a collecter item.

Much appreciate your responses to my "jitters" blog. Your encouragements have given me what I needed to go ahead with purchase. Any more comments will be appreciated as well.

I talked with a friend of mine in Desert Hot Springs, CA today. He has heard me gush about my lil smart on more than one occasion. He and his Aunt were driving down the road and saw the smart dealership in Riverside. They pulled in. He said they have a smart car that is cut in half. I've seen the cars stripped down to show the safety tridion cell. So I wondered if that was what he meant. But he said "cut in half
." I still asked. He said it looked like they took a chain saw and cut it in… Continue

OK, five weeks since I took delivery. I expected questions, driving such an unusual looking vehicle. And, I don't expect the questions will end for at least a year or two, when the smart will become as common as perhaps the Mini. And, I have to confess, the attention was a lot of fun, for the first 20 days or so. It is starting to wear thin. I don't mind it so much in parking lots or other places I've parked the car. But, people hanging out of their windows taking pictures and SHOUTING at me to… Continue
