Well, we've had "the Tardis" for a little over two months now. Helen took it cross country to Pennsylvania to pick up our niece for her annual visit with us. She said she had a blast driving it out there and coming back. Lots of stares on the turnpike, and lots of conversations at the rest stops. Helen also related the following anecdote, "I was driving and saw a group holding up signs for a $5.00 car wash as a fundraiser. When they saw the Smart coming toward them, they both started yelling,… Continue

I almost didn't blog this for fear of being flamed but here goes.
I was only on the orphan list (had my reservation) for one month before I got my smart car. Everyone on the Round Rock Center's orphan list got an email last Sat. morning stating that they had a smart that was not ordered (reserved) and therefore not orphaned but available unencumbered and first come first served. I got the email 30 min after it was sent and I was out the door with all 4 kids and partner in tow 30 min… Continue

Well, tomorrow we're off to Round Rock smart Center for a few items. We need a sun shield for the windshield really badly, we're in Texas after all. We are gonna buy the rubber floor mats and probably make an appt. to get his windows tinted. I imagine that those are some of the most common upgrades people make. Here's a picture of the trunk organizer we're using until we find something more worthy.
We've both enjoyed talking about our little smart to people with questions at the… Continue

One of my favorite things is going around town with the top down in my Cabrio! The sacrfice is that we lose mileage because of it (less aero-dynamic, more wind drag), but I like to live on the wild and free side! hehehe!
I luv the fact that you can uncover the top with the remote key. One observation is that you have to put the key in the ignition in order to completely drop the back, additionally you have to have the key in the ignition in & hold the button down in order to lift… Continue

My MSU senior Spartan son needed to trade cars so he could get his Grand Prix brakes repaired locally at a much reduced price. It was fixed within 48 hours but he doesn't want to trade me back! Help!

Interesting thing happend as we came home yesterday... before I go on, I'd like to say that I'm not a "neighborly" person by any stretch of the imagination. Not that I'm rude but more of a hermit in a sense. We come home, we get in the house, and the front door rarely opens after that. I don't even like to answer the door when the Jehovah Witnesses come by with their little Watchtower magazines telling me I won't have a one way ticket to heaven unless I convert.
I do, wave at the… Continue

Tonight, on the way home from iKea, some guy was beep beep beeping his horn behind me. After traveling in stop and go construction traffic I was in no mood, but when he pulled up beside me with his window rolled down and that eager look on his 20 something year old face motioning for me to roll down my window I couldn't resist. I rolled the passenger window. My son was with me and grinning the whole time.
The guy yelled, "What kinda car is that"?
I yelled back, "A smart… Continue

Like many others here, I get a lot of questions about my lil smart fortwo. I've had people follow me into stores and even wait for me to come back out. Early on I had heard about how others left slips of paper with information on them in a plastic bag on their windshields. I did not want to deal with slips of paper that would need to periodically need to be replaced. So I printed off one sheet, put it in a clear protective sleeve and put it in the windshield. Today I updated and edited my own… Continue

Saw a Black Smart today on our way home! That's the first time I've seen a black one in real life. We actually have one on order. After we adopted our orphan, we decided to still keep it on order just in case.

well, it looks like either my reservation number was not high enough, or I did not answer soon enough for the "orphans list". It's crazy how much I want this car. I am a pretty patient guy, especially when you consider I have already been waiting for 8 years, but I would like to be able to go to my local dealership and pic up one now. I am having the same issue with the Iphone, I waited the year for the 3-g model to come out and now I am going to pick one up on july 11th.
It's also… Continue

After a bit of orphan list drama last night (first they had the car, and then they didn't), I got another call this morning saying that they did indeed have a car available for me! I'll be stopping by the Seattle Smart Center on my home tonight to take care of all the paper work and all that good stuff and I AM EXCITED!
The orphan isn't exactly what I had planned on getting, but I'm willing to make a few sacrifices for the ability to enjoy a Smart car 6 months earlier than estimated.

At the gas station putting fuel in my lil smart someone asks,
Is that one of them electric cars?
Yep. I often enjoy putting gasoline in my electric car.
The first time they realized what they'd said. The second person then went on to ask,
Where is the battery?
I left it home today. That's why I have to put gas in it.
As many of us have heard,
What if you get hit by a truck?
I've been riding a Harley for years. No one has ever… Continue

well, after printing my first blog, I received an e-mail this weekend from the dealership about the Orphan List, the e-mail was sent on Sat and I did not open my e-mails till Monday, I replied, and I hope I get the one I am interested in, a passion, in white and a black tridion, I think it has a red interior, a little odd configuration but still, I dont see any reason why I could'nt buy an orphan now and when my smart came in sell the orphan, and pick up mine. We were on the "Orphan" list for only one month but we jumped at the chance for our little guy. Here's what they emailed their Orphan List ...
"Smart Center -- has just received a one of a kind smart that is available for immediate delivery!
This passion coupe has a paint scheme you won't find anywhere else. It is first come first serve, no deposits taken - come see it for yourself - it won't last the day!!
Hope to see you today!"
and they did see us… Continue

Our three-year-old loves the Smart car. I think I've mentioned this previously. The convertible top, the fact that she's sitting next to me, the size ("It's MY size, Mommy"), and the 6-CD changer that lets her alternate between Sharon, Lois and Brahm and Laurie Berkner at the touch of a button (my touch; her seat's way too far back to touch the dash with her hands although I've had to tell her that it's off limits anyway since she realized she can reach it with her toes).
And we talk… Continue
