I have been inducted. I am One of the few. The proud. The smart.
I was heading towards the freeway; he had just gotten off. We saw each other from a distance - two cars, identical in colour and model. Our roofs were both up; it looked like rain. As he passed me he flashed me a peace sign. I jumped up and down in my seat and waved excitedly back at him.
A fellow smart car driver on the road. I've heard they are out there but had not seen one. Until today.

Would love to know what owners of smart cars feel is the best things about their smart cars. Any feedback would be appreciated. Are these cars a fad or are they a smart alternative to a full size gas guzzler?

Morning Edition, June 18, 2008 · When oil prices go up, so do natural gas prices, and both increases have a ripple effect on the economy. Shampoo bottles, pantyhose, buttons — you name it, and it requires oil or gas to make it.

1) Pick your nose
2) Park too close to the inner end of a parking space
I don't actually go around picking my nose in my car. But it occurred to me today, after the second person in less than 5 minutes hung their head out the window of their SUV and gave me a thumbs up as they passed me in my smart car, that I'm being watched.
A guy at PCC and his wife actually got OUT of their own car and snapped a photo on his camera phone of me and Bobbin getting out of the smart… Continue

With about 3000 miles on my new smart (I commute in Montana about 50 miles round trip 5-6 days a week.), I am averaging 42 mpg city and about 52 on longer trips. I wonder if I might be the first person to run OUT OF GAS in my smart!! I was not paying attention to the gauge, and boom! OUt of gas! My friends laughed so hard! That's the only thing I wish was different---I wish the gas gauge would chime when it got down to the reserve amount in the tank. Just intermittently, not constantly. I am… Continue

I luv this site! It's awesome to read other people that have the same experiences! I've never had a car that has ever attracted the kind of attention that this car gets. It's a double edge sword but never dull.
From reading other people’s blogs, I've realized that we were very lucky in getting the Smart as quickly as we did. We literally took a look at them on a Sunday, and by the following Saturday, we owned one! We were smart enough to be on the orphaned list. From the sounds of… Continue

I filled up the tank on the Smart car for the first time June 18th. I thought it appropriate to post some stats.
I'd had the car for exactly 1 week before the last "gallon" dropped off the meter.
I'd put 290 miles on it by the time I rolled into the gas station.
I pumped 7.7 gallons into the 8 gallon tank, at a cost of $4.61 per gallon.
So I'm averaging about 37.6 mpg in the car so far, and about $35.50 a week in gas.
Compare that to the 18… Continue

We picked up our car June 11th after work. What a blast :-) My 3-year-old daughter was just head over heels giddy with the notion that she'd get to ride "up front" next to Mommy in her car seat. And when I put the convertible roof down after we got off the freeway, she was just beside herself. "Mommy! Look! Look up at the SKY!"
We logged over 50 miles before the first "gallon" disappeared from the 8-gallon indicator.
My husband's car is now officially up for sale so if you… Continue

I saw a police officer drive by my office really slow and my boss told me he was sitting behind my Smart for a few minutes. All I could figure was he was running the tag to make sure it was legal. About 30 minutes later I need to run out and sitting in the turn lane of the main road was the same officer. I was stopped at a light and he pulled up next to me and started asking me questions. Of course he had to ask "What would you do if you got hit by a semi in that?" I just looked at him and said… Continue

Aftermarket parts are an awesome idea to make your Smart car more unique than any other. Although some aftermarket parts will void your current warranty, the aftermarket part should come with a warranty for itself. IF anybody needs any recommendations for anything about their smart car, please feel free to ask. I researched into the smart car for 6 years before mine finally arrived and was one of the first people to put my name down for the reserve once it came up. I am currently working on a… Continue

Heard all kinds of comments about the Smart's transmission (see NY Times). What is going on here? Also have not heard much about the cost and availability of parts- love to hear how others have experienced getting parts like oil/AC filters, replacement parts like side mirrors, etc. Since my nearest option is also a Mercedes dealership in SF who does not have a reputation for service and parts, I sure like to know what I have to look forward to...

I test drove a ForTwo Passion at the San Jose Dealer several months ago. In many ways it felt similar to Madge (my 1969 Beetle). It gets real cozy in the VW when a passenger comes with but the ForTwo seems roomy by comparison. The two cars seem to accelerate about the same. Madge gets twitchy above 70 so I never go faster but I image her top speed would be about 85 mph. I've heard, absent gusty winds, the ForTwo is relatively stable at higher speeds. On the test drive, I took the ForTwo on the… Continue

I tell my young single friends that this car is the way to meet people! at traffic lights, people yell from their cars to get information. One evening a guy chased me down the sidewalk to catch me at the traffic light. People on the Turnpike have pulled up with cameras in their hands -- taking our picture! Gas stations, grocery stores -- we always seem to have people looking at it while we do our business. Yes - at least 15 minutes to extend a trip. I've consider charging people for rides --… Continue

As yet another person called out to me through my open window, and I called back "half the car, twice the mileage!" and got the big smile and thumbs up, I told my dad about the best ever reaction I had gotten to my little smarty:
I was driving along a wooded roadway, playing with the paddle shifters and going a bit fast when I figured I'd better slow down for the upcoming traffic. A county sheriff pulled up next to me at the light and motioned for me to roll my window down..."Are you… Continue

In 2006, I purchased a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am for my son.
My son is tall, and continued to grow. He is 6'7 and has outgrown the Grand Am. He does not drive much, so we let him drive our 2003 Suburban, and I have been driving the Grand Am.
I was considering a VW Jetta or Paasat with a deisel engine, but was just thinking.
However, after filling up the Suburban and my 4X4 diesel crew cab truck recently, I started to consider a more economical… Continue
