I test drove a ForTwo Passion at the San Jose Dealer several months ago. In many ways it felt similar to Madge (my 1969 Beetle). It gets real cozy in the VW when a passenger comes with but the ForTwo seems roomy by comparison. The two cars seem to accelerate about the same. Madge gets twitchy above 70 so I never go faster but I image her top speed would be about 85 mph. I've heard, absent gusty winds, the ForTwo is relatively stable at higher speeds. On the test drive, I took the ForTwo on the… Continue

I tell my young single friends that this car is the way to meet people! at traffic lights, people yell from their cars to get information. One evening a guy chased me down the sidewalk to catch me at the traffic light. People on the Turnpike have pulled up with cameras in their hands -- taking our picture! Gas stations, grocery stores -- we always seem to have people looking at it while we do our business. Yes - at least 15 minutes to extend a trip. I've consider charging people for rides --… Continue

As yet another person called out to me through my open window, and I called back "half the car, twice the mileage!" and got the big smile and thumbs up, I told my dad about the best ever reaction I had gotten to my little smarty:
I was driving along a wooded roadway, playing with the paddle shifters and going a bit fast when I figured I'd better slow down for the upcoming traffic. A county sheriff pulled up next to me at the light and motioned for me to roll my window down..."Are you… Continue

In 2006, I purchased a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am for my son.
My son is tall, and continued to grow. He is 6'7 and has outgrown the Grand Am. He does not drive much, so we let him drive our 2003 Suburban, and I have been driving the Grand Am.
I was considering a VW Jetta or Paasat with a deisel engine, but was just thinking.
However, after filling up the Suburban and my 4X4 diesel crew cab truck recently, I started to consider a more economical… Continue

We have a Passion Coupe ordered sinse summer of 2007. And some how during the earlier ordering process we were lost, but found in February of 2008. Our delivery date is around September of 2009. I let it go until last month and decided that I would call and see if there were any Orphans around. We give them a color preference and standard options. Two weeks later I got a call that there is one availible with color choice. We crused up to Penski in Phoenix. Within 2 hours I was headed back to… Continue

I just moved into my new home. The garage is an old one, built in 1949. It has two heavy sliding doors, each one locking with a padlock on either side of the garage.
I had parked my Smart in the garage on one side. My wife backed out our other car from the other side but had neglected to unlock my side of the garage. So I simply did a U-turn in my garage and drove out the other door after turning around.
I love how small and nimble the car is.

I was so excited when I got the call from the dealer telling me they had an orphan Passion Coupe I shouted into my phone "I WANT IT".
I didn't even ask what color it was or what options it had on it all I knew was in a few hours I would finally have my Smart Car. As soon as I hung up the phone I called my husband and told him to take his lunch break (it was 10am) and tell the boss he was taking a long one. He came and got me about 30 minutes later and we went downtown Atlanta to the only… Continue

My husband was enjoying the commotion of riding in my car until about two weeks ago. We had to run two errands in opposite directions so he took his beautiful SLK320 and I had my SMART. As luck would have it, I ended up behind him on our route home. As everyone was pointing to my car, not his - as is usual - he asked me to be sure not to drive behind him anymore!! The spotlight is only so big.

It will take about a year for me to get my smart.
But, I knew if I waited that long, all the good personalized license plates for smarts would be gone for the state of Texas. Some, unfortunately, already were. But, I did get the vanity plate BE SMRT (Texas allows only 6 characters for a license plate.) So my advice is to act now, even though you don't have your car yet to get the vanity plate that you want for your state. Keep in touch1 Allen, Austin, TX

I just found out that my sister and her husband rented a smart while they were on Santorini. He's 6'4" and had plenty of room!
I have a very looooooooong wait for my smart. I haven't seen one up close yet. I did see one out on Hwy 93 heading east while I was heading west. That's the closest I've been to one.
I saw a picture of one in a magazine about two months ago. I'm going to watch The Divinci Code again. There are many small cars out there, but none are as cute.

Well, today was the day and I am now past 1000 miles. I am now past my break-in period, whatever that means. MIsmart is running really well, and loves to get out and fly down the road. I continue to be asked questions all the time and the #1 is, "Where do you plug it in?" They all think it is electric for some reason. #2 "Aren't you afraid to drive on the freeway? Don't the big trucks blow you over?" I can't wait to bump into a fellow smartie and pass along that knowing smile and thumbs up!… Continue

Before my Smart Car was ever delivered, I had to promise the Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade Chairman that I would indeed drive my new car in his annual parade. Fortunately, my car arrived two weeks prior to the parade. Better yet, my Smart Car was in the third position in the parade...only behind the U.S. Color Guard and the Elmhurst Fire Chief. It was quite an honor, that's for sure. Since I was able to secure the SMARTT license plate, that caught the attention of the parade… Continue

...of course I can wait, but its hard. I just searched the other smartinsider members and saw another wilmingtonian with 'my car'. Same colors. Oh well, that's what I get for waiting so long to put in my reservation.

Thanks for your comments, fellow enthusiasts. I wish I could believe that smart was really worried about lost sales. If production simply cannot meet demand, for whatever reason, the lengthy queue proves that they don't have to worry about selling every unit they can produce.
If we take the wait as an opportunity to make even smarter choices, then we have served ourselves and each other well indeed. I think manufacturers finally got the message - anything under 30 mpg is no longer… Continue
