Let's look at the other side of the story...I work at smart center South Charlotte and 3 of the 5 that we had available were actually used smarts 2 of which we bought from a company that decided not to use them for a Marketing Campaign. They were not orphans. The other 2 that were orphans were accessorized with the most popular accessories (smart chrome package, smart floormats, smart gauges, etc) as well as an in-dash navigation system and custom painted body panels. We have received many, many compliments on these cars and have already sold 3 of them.
Please try to remember that the dealers are not out to get smart owners or reservations holders...we actually LOVE you guys and are here to be your friends and resouces. Go easy on us...

If you live in the St Louis area and wait a few months---LLBs car will be available as an orphan with lots of goodies

The Colorado Smart Center (Smart Denver) is charging an extra $3,500 over the price of the car if you want to adopt an orphan!! That's basically "as is" from whoever ordered it. I am so glad ours arrived, because we would never have paid the extra $$$ for it. Takes a LOT of fuel savings to cover that additional expense!

I think the orphan policy is made of 40% lame and 60% fail. As it is, there's no way they can skip reservation holders and sell the car on the open market without being unfair. There's also no way they can ignore the general public and only sell to reservation holders without being unfair. It's lose - lose no matter how you look at it for everyone except the dealership.

They make the same amount of money off of you no matter what... Unless you orphan your car. Then they can make a larger profit. It seems like this is a customer service nightmare as it encourages the dealerships to treat reservation holders with the upmost contempt. Why should I be nice to you if it's worth more to me to be rude? Hopefully the dealerships are not blinded by greed in the short term, as that would hurt the public perception of the brand name no matter how cute the car may be.

And to your topic, a full $10,000.00 over base price is a bit much, unless one of those options was "a paper bag full of cash in the glove box"
