I don't believe that you can get the car registered in the US as is because it will not meet US emissions standards. The ones in Florida are likely owned by snowbirds and are likely still registered in Canada.

I looked into buying one in Canada before they were available here. Had a long talk with my brother in law who is a Candian Customs agent. I was too scared over the variables on bringing it back into the States. I don't remember the particulars but the bottom line was I could not accurately predict how much I was going to have to pay to bring it across the border. A lot depended on the agent that I got and how they chose to process the paperwork. The fees could have been substantial & I didn't want to risk it.
We have dealers in this area who regularly import cars from Canada - and if I had decided to pursue that route I would have hired one of them to do it for me. For me it was just easier to wait (but I wasn't trying to get a diesel).

There are a couple down in Florida but no word on how they got in really.
