LOL ya, I am thinking first time I seen the picture, did Paris go and buy one? hehe, I could see why the two lovely ladies would get some looks, with or without the car. The car would just add to it. I don't see many in my town, even though they have delivered a ton. They get a truck load in every week or two it seems. Can't wait, just a few more weeks.

I forget who it was, but another smart USA insider member calls it smart time: every errand takes 15 minutes longer so you can answer questions about the car. And to DendoRacing: I was one of the first PT Cruiser owners, and experienced the same sort of celebrity that I am having with the smart. And now Michael Scott on The Office drives one! shudder

I've had my smart since Feb., and people are still asking me about the car in every parking lot, at red lights, etc. So yes, it does change your life, you are an ambassador, and you have to have a sense of humor--even when you're in a hurry. Check out my "pulled over" story for my favorite episode of Q & A.

Early Mini owners experienced the same effect. Unfortunately it doesn't last.

We ordered our Minis and waited six months or more for delivery, tracking the delivery progress through shipping company websites and giving mutual support to other Mini buyers through the various forums.

When our Minis arrived, they were the talk of the town. People would look in amazement as you drove by, you would get ask questions about the car where ever you went. There was heaps of hyped press coverage, invites to movie premieres (The Italian Job), local club activities and much envy from co-workers. Everyone who bought a Mini was a genuine enthusiast and owning a Mini was cool.

After a while supply catches up with demand. Some of the original owners decide to sell theirs and they become available on the second hand market. Now anyone can work in off the street and drive away the same day. They are advertised for sale in the classifieds in the local paper. Buyers are no longer enthusiasts, club membership and activity dies down, and the press moves on to the next new thing. Before you know it your post middle age boss has bought one.

Just a minor correction: Henry Ford did not invent the (gasoline engine powered) automobile. Carl Benz did.
And: Funny enough: the company that carries his heritage (Mercedes-Benz) brought the smart to market.
Other than that: I am not sure that everybody envies us, but I do agree that there is a high potential that this car may change the future of the automobile to some extent. Time will tell just how much exactly.
