My Smart Car Was The Talk of the Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade!

Hi All;

Before my Smart Car was ever delivered, I had to promise the Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade Chairman that I would indeed drive my new car in his annual parade. Fortunately, my car arrived two weeks prior to the parade. Better yet, my Smart Car was in the third position in the parade...only behind the U.S. Color Guard and the Elmhurst Fire Chief. It was quite an honor, that's for sure. Since I was able to secure the SMARTT license plate, that caught the attention of the parade viewers as well. Let's hope this car becomes as popular in the U.S. as in Europe. I would definitely get a kick out of seeing these adorable cars everywhere!!!

Hi Sandra;

Yes, it's Elmhurst Illinois. I grew up in Oak Park. As a matter of fact, I read your blog yesterday and had a good laugh. I was wondering if you were going to be the first ever in the U.S. to get a speeding ticket with a Smart Car?! How nice that all turned out okay with the officer. Your comment about your "Little Smarty" stuck in my mind and although I've not named my car yet, I'm considering your words as a potential winner for the name of my Smart Car (I hope you don't mind). My husband refers to my Smart Car as "Betsy's Baby Car!"

It would be fun to meet somewhere this summer and share some of those funny comments that come from those people who are seeing the cars for the very first time. My husband and I are just as guilty from when we first saw the Smart Cars in Paris back in the spring of 2001. I took several photos and eventually we rented a Smart Car in 2004 when we were in St. Martin. Just too much fun!

On a very sad note, my "little smarty" has been back at the dealership for two weeks! After 410 miles and only my second fill-up, the gas station pump malfunctioned and did not turn off. It forced gas back into the air-intake lines, the charcoal pump, and shot all over the outside of my car and created quite a massive spill at the gas station. I've been going to the same gas station for ten years and never had a problem like that before. I even went there for my first fill-up and didn't have that problem. So far, the repair bills are $1,200.00 and of course they aren't covered by the warranty since the gas station pump caused the damage. The only good thing is that my car is insured by Safeco and they are paying all of my repairs except for the $100.00 deductible. Whew! I've been just sick about the whole thing and have been cautioning everyone I know not to use the automatic clip on the gas station pump handle anymore due to all of the damage my little smarty has had. I will be very happy when my little smarty is back in the garage and safe and sound again.

Is this Elmhust Illinois? If so, I live in Oak Park...have you signed up for the Chicago area group yet? I think it would be fun to meet at a Portillo's or area drive-in restaurant sometime and share stories. (See my blog called "Pulled Over")
