I don't understand the system. Some people seem to get their cars in 6 or 7 months while others wait 12 to 18 or even more. How does the prioritization work????

I lucked up! Went to the dealership lot and drove out in the smart car!No waiting! A lady had ordered hers, but did not want it.So her loss was our gain! Love it! So it's a matter of being in the RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME! Although they did tell us, there was now a 14 month wait period at the time.

I reserved a Smart in August 08 and bought one from a private party in September off Ebay. It was close to where I live so I figured why not. My original reservation is scheduled for delivery in Feb - March 2010.

I waited 2 weeks short of a year. I've read that it depends somewhat on where you live (or where you dealer is). The dealers are only allocated so many cars a month and if your dealer has to cover a large area it could take longer. For me it was worth the wait to get exactly the car I wanted. Don't know how long you've been waiting but if it's been less than a year, I'd say hang in there.

Well, back in the "old days" (last year), when all there were was reservations, and no orphans, it was a widely speculated affair. Now that a year has come and gone, and the economy has tanked, and there are unsold smarts sitting around, I suspect we are still in the same situation. IMHO, it comes down to a number of factors: what's on order, what's being produced, and who has the biggest back-log here in the states.
It may be as simple as that, or it may make the BCS ranking formula (college football) look like 3rd grade math.
I would strongly recommend that you look around for something like what you ordered, and if you can get it, cancel your reservation. Otherwise, hang tight, don't worry about what others are doing/getting, and enjoy living vicariously through those of us who already suffered the wait before you.
In the mean time, welcome to the smart community!
