My Smart Car just arrived. I can buy an extended warranty for 1 yr at $1,544, 2 yrs at $1,561, 3 yrs at $1,748 & 4 yrs at $1,851. The dealer is telling me the 2yr at $1,561 is very popular. Are most owners buying an extended warranty? Also they are offereing "tire and wheel protection for $595 for the time I own the car. Thoughts....did you buy these warranties? Also they are pushing Venture Shield to protect the paint on the front of the care from road chips.

Thx, Wanda

Having owned a total lemon that had thousands of dollars worth of problems before 100k miles (failure of power windows, engine, defroster, heat, a/c compressor & coolant storage), I didn't think twice before purchasing an extended warranty this time around. I was able to get mine through my credit union where I financed the car. It cost me $1306 with no per visit deductible, and is good for 7 years, 100k miles and is also transferrable or refundable at a pro-rated charge.

The longer you wait to purchase the warranty, say after the two year manufacturers warranty expires, it will cost more and give you less coverage and options. Things you want to look out for are deductibles. If your car has to go in for several different problems, it will end up costing you more in the end. If you don't have any or few issues, then the deductible option will be cheaper.

The warranty I got through IWS is a named exclusion--so it covers everything except what they name (it was a pretty short list).

If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me. I actually work for this credit union and have been trained on warranties. I do not get any benefit or credit just a fellow smartie trying to help out :)

I got the 3 extra years and paid only $995, which I have read is the standard price. Seems your dealer is inflating the warranty prices.

I purchased an extended warranty (added 2 years + standard 2 year warranty to get 4 years coverage) at time of purchase and was only $971 (Smart San Diego) - I think the $1561 price you were quoted is inflated. Try going to another Smart dealer and get a quote to compare.

Thank you to everyone for the comments!! This is the first time I have ever posted a question and it was great to get all the feedback. I should be picking up my "smart" in a few days. Based on your feedback I don't think I will be buying the extended warranty, etc. This was VERY helpful!

I purchased the three year extended warrantee and it was less than $1,000. This is on a 2009 smart.

Those warranty prices seem completely out of line-the one offered to me started with the extension to 3 years/36,000 miles at $395.00 and went up from there.

ok i bought the tire warnetie that was about 399 for 5 years i think that is good. i did not buy the extended warrentee which is 1200.00 for three years, which i think is a good deal if the economey was good i would junp at the the extendeed warentee it comes down to 400. bucks a year i think that is not only fair but cheap. if you can aford it go for it

I strongly suggest that you check out the analysis of "extended warranties" from respected and unbiased consumer groups such as Consumer Reports. When you do you'll find that the all strongly recommend against them as they're generally very expensive for what you get (or don't get). Also please understand they ARE NOT warranties and ARE NOT backed by the manufacturer. They're service contracts with independent coimpanies. As for the 'tire & wheel protection," check out the roadside assistance available from your insurance company.

I partricularly love your dealer's recommendation for "Venture Shield to protect the paint on the front of the car from road chips." THERE IS NO PAINT ON THE FRONT OF A smart! All the body panels are plastic and cannot "chip." That's a total and complete ripoff.

FYI. I worked in automobile dealerships for 45 years before retiring a couple of years ago.

Enjoy your smart. I love mine.

FYI, my 5 yr, 75k miles (total, including what comes on the car) w/$100 deductable per visit only costs me a $1000. It's transferrable and an extension of the original smartcar warranty. I usually don't purchase the extra warranties, but it seems very reasonable to me. Could't really go wrong.

Good Luck... you'll love the car!

first, my disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic, I don't work for a car dealer, I own a smart car, I've bought extended warranties and I've passed.

My last round with a dealer (not a smart dealer nor a Mercedes dealer) I purchased an extended warranty. I did it because the dealer was physically convenient, and I could wrap some maintenance into my loan. In the end, I probably didn't save a bunch of money, and maybe spent more, but it may be my fault too. It became inconvenient with job changes to go back to a dealer. So, I ended up paying out of pocket for some things. Also, in the end, it felt like a lot of the routine things at 60K, 90K, etc. weren't covered. It was like the extended warranty was doing a little less than what even the maintenance guide in the manual suggested.

Back to my disclaimer. I didn't read through the extended warranty options for my smart car, mainly because the dealer is 60 minutes from my house (30 minutes on the other side of town from my work). While I may get the big maintenance done by my dealer, I'll probably get the little maintenance done somewhere more convenient (once they prove to me that they understand a smart car).

anyway, just my thoughts and opinions.
