As yet another person called out to me through my open window, and I called back "half the car, twice the mileage!" and got the big smile and thumbs up, I told my dad about the best ever reaction I had gotten to my little smarty:

I was driving along a wooded roadway, playing with the paddle shifters and going a bit fast when I figured I'd better slow down for the upcoming traffic. A county sheriff pulled up next to me at the light and motioned for me to roll my window down..."Are you in a hurry?" he asked. "No," I said (thinking oh boy...did he clock me?)

"Would you mind pulling into that parking lot up there so I can look at the car? I've never seen one like that before!"

"No problem," said I, laughing! And, we had a nice visit while he asked about the car--does it really go up to 50 miles per hour? Who makes it? The usual questions...I assured him it was fine on the expressway, and that I'd driven it where it was legal to go 75 mph with no problems.

I waved as he drove off, and opened my car door to get in, when a sedan drove up behind me and the gentleman asked, "Excuse me, are you in a hurry?"...

That's a great story! I love it when people are open to going small. I'm still amazed at the people who hold tight to their gas guzzling, huge consumption ways.

Wow, I feel so lucky to have only been on the Orphan list for one month. I loved SandraK's "Pulled over" story. Ever notice how people have to tell you what great gas milage their BIG car gets when they're talkin' to ya about your Smartie? LOL

I had an early reservation on smartusa.com, but also signed up for the waiting list at the dealership. I got a call in just a couple of weeks, and drove home that night! My dealer said most of the others on the waiting list wanted a convertible, so I got lucky, plus--the waiting list is a lot longer now that more people have heard about and seen them. When I called smartusa to cancel my order they were very nice and glad to hear I had gotten an orphan, and said that my cancellation just helped move someone else on up the list! My deposit refund check came in a week or two, and all is well. So do check with your dealer about getting on their orphans list, even if you've placed an online order--it might help you get one sooner!

If you're lucky, there might be "orphan" Smarts available in your area, if you don't mind a choice of colors or accesories other than what you originally planned on.

I was one of the very first reservation holders.... early, early one, before the web site was up.. My delivery was SLOooooow..... not the Jan/Feb-08 "promised". My order was assigned to /was dependant on the planned dealership, [near by registered zip code] getting the store doors open. If you live somewhere without a dealership... SOL. If you live near a future store location, you'll end up waiting. If I had known I would have used an address in Orlando.... and driven over to pick my car up, 5 months ago.. That's the difference in MY case. Just a thought to share for early reservation holders, still waiting. Current orders or reservations placed "now" @ an open store, will be in a long que waiting on factory production limits.

I just re-checked my delivery date on the estimator because of Oscar's comment, and my date remains the same as it has been (February to April 2009). I am very relieved!

Amazing car. Like all the other folks have said, plan on an extra 15 minutes to answer questions and let people have look over. Everywhere you go, people take pictures, send photos on phones, ect. Women especially like to stop and ask questions, definetly a babe magnet.... better then a puppy....

Well we've been rolling along in our Smart for three months now and love it. If you don't like a lot of attention, don't drive one. Allow extra time to answer all the questions of total strangers. The men typically ask: What's the mpg? Where did you get it? How fast can it go?, etc. or they get sarcastic, with "What toy store did you get it at?" or "How fast do you have to pedal?" but the women just gush and say "How adorable it that! or That's the cutest car, I want one!" Meanwhile, as the gas continues to climb, I'm really glad we got SMART.

Does anyone know why all the delivery dates for people with reservations been bumped up by a whole year? I've had a reservation since last December with an estimated delivery date of June 2008. Now when I checked my delivery schedule it's been bumped up to JUne 2009. What's the deal?
