I've been on some of the other smart fan websites but found the attitude a little negative sometimes. During my visit to my dealer today (Hi everyone in Chandler!), they told me about this website (showing me the cool how-to videos) and I thought I would give it a try instead. Now I see I'm in good company... You all are just as in love with your smarts like I am with mine!
To tell the truth - I'm not like many of you who have been waiting for smart for years. I really only found out about the smart last summer, and immediately placed a reservation. My wait was tremendous - almost two years! I'm thinking, I must be crazy... But I knew "pebbles" was going to be worth it! Especially when gas was over $4.
I should note that I'm a naturally impatient person. I don't like to wait for things, but what else could I do? The smart had a waitlist that was 1-2 years long everywhere, and I wasn't going to buy anything but an official, authorized car. And I read a lot about the orphans, and the markups, and the rip-offs, and I was also very turned off. Who would want to pay extra when they could just wait for their very own customized car?
But my impatience wore out. I decided I couldn't wait any longer - I needed my baby before Christmas! So I took a chance and headed over to the Chandler dealership to see if there was ANYTHING available for a good price. I was amazed. Sure, there is still a waiting list for cars, but there were also several orphans available at MSRP Most importantly, they had one that matched 95% of what I wanted, with no mark ups, right there on the lot!
The manager told me that most smart dealerships have stock of orphans offered at MSRP. I imagine they all still have few marked up with gadgets and gear, but I was really surprised. What made me sad (and a little mad) was that these MSRP orphans aren't being adopted because people still believe there is a super long waiting list (like I did), or because many are afraid of the markups (like I was)! Amazing, right!?
But I walked in and drove out on the same day, paid not a cent over sticker, and got "pebbles" as my Christmas gift.
So, here's my contribution to this new community of smart lovers. For all of you who are still waiting for your cars (or want a second one), I recommend asking your dealer what orphans they have available at MSRP. I bet you every dealership has a few just waiting for homes, like mine was. And I'm glad I went - otherwise I would have kept waiting for another year because I believed orphans were only available marked up the wazoo, or weren't available at all.
So thanks to Chandler for introducing me to you all, and for finding me "pebbles"!
