Are drivers deliberately trying to pass your smart, too?

It's probably my imagination, but I'd swear that when drivers of SUVs or hot cars get a glimpse of my white smart they speed up and try to find a way to pass me.

The other day, a young kid literally pulled up next to me on Onondaga Hill, half of the passenger's side of his car was missing, he looked at me, put pedal to the medal, burned rubber, and I assume exceeded the 40 mph speed limit, and left me behind for 100 feet until he found himself behind a line of cars.

If I could communicate with these people, I would just simply say, "Listen, it's going to be okay. You can buy one. There are two smart car centers here in Upstate. Orphans are available. You don't have to wait. Just head to Latham for a visit."

Or, "I feel bad for you. I am sorry. Yeah, I know prices for gas are low right now, and I accept that you can beat me in foot race. I just did not want to drop a fortune on a new car. I like having fun, driving something that is protected and small, and not spending our precious monetary resources on gas, at any price. Sorry."

This imaginary experience of mine began right away. No sooner than I left the lot, got on the NYS Thruway, drivers were speeding up to catch me, gawk-and-go, only to slow down later, so that I had to pass them!! Am I being crazy? Or, have you have had this experience? Funny part is, the truckers are the courteous ones.

Oh well, that's the price of driving different. Oh yeah, I spent nearly as much on Thruwy fees and gas taxes than the actual gas fuel. That was interesting.

I have had the same thing. SUV's that just want to get around you cause they think you are going to slow them down.

I have that problem, even when I'm easily keeping up with traffic, and trust me I keep up with traffic very well. There are just some people that can't stand that the little car is keeping up so well.

There was a song from the 50's called beep beep, about a Nash Rambler passing a Cadillac... I sort of think it's similar. They have some illusion of pride, not to try and over psycho-analyze it, but if they only LOVED their car as much as we LOVE ours, they wouldn't be so concerned to prove the one thing we could care less about, and that's being passed. :-)

I just think many of those passers like how good my rear end looks they can't wait to see my front...!!!
I don't care what you drive somebody will try to pass it.
All you Smarties just enjoy you are in the coolest ride out there.

So far must of the people that has passed me do it to take pictures. Is so crazy! Of course there are people always trying to pass no matter what you drive. I onlly had one hostile driver that did not like the fact my smartie passed his big old truck and had to pass me. I just laughed!

I dont think people are trying to be jerks, to be honest. Sometimes people genuinely think the smart is faster than it looks, and often times will try to race me to prove a point.... whatever point that may be. Just ignore it and go about your business instead of taking it so personally.

Kate, That probably makes about 5 of us with smarts in the area.

Thanks everyone for your sharing your experiences.

I agree on the gas situation. Today, I exceed 40 mpg, so I am getting prepared.

I have noticed the same thing here in Springfield, IL. The SUV drivers can't seem to stand being passed by a smart, and the Trans Am drivers either tailgate or blow right past you; oh well. Just wait unitl the economy starts to kick in again; it will. They are saying that when it does, the price at the pump will exceed what was paid last year, and go in the $5-$6 range. What is it, "He who laughs first laughs last?" We shall see!

corey. I found that most people just like my silver and blue smartie. I have to give myself twenty extra minutes when I go any place because I have to play 20 questions with most of them but I don't mind. I got my car in Buffalo last oct, I really like driving it!!! I live in Syracuse, N.Y. Kate

I've noticed the same thing in Southern California - people passing , then getting in front of me even though I'm not in the fast lane. Maybe they're just looking at the car's great styling! Incidentally, my wife refuses to go anywhere with me - since the guy in the Dodge Viper pointed and laughed at her in my Smart. Wait until gas goes back to $4/gallon!

I saw a car that had a TV installed in the back of the drivers seat for the people behind them to watch. Maybe if we installed TVs in the back of the drivers seats of our smart cars, the people behind us would have something to watch!
