I have the front bike bracket (passenger side) all designed and dimensioned. Now I will be looking for a fab shop to build. Now to get some prices and build.
It is quite simple. A plate and 2 tubes welded underneath. At the rear (driver's side) will be just a tube. The tubes will slide over the 5/8 - 8 ACME threaded rod and a nut will hold everything in place. The bike will sit about 6 inches to the rear of the plastic fascia.
To keep the bike far enough away from the body and to allow for my 2 different bikes on 1 bike rack. I have develop tube spacers. Just in case I need to increase or decrease the distance to the car.
The beauty of this bike rack is that I do not have to worry about opening the rear glass. At the front fork of the bike, the rack will pivot. The bike can be moved (pivoted) out of the way for access. If there is a 'problem' with wind resistance... I have an idea for that (if needed).
The bike rack itself costs $259.99, now I'm trying to get the remainder of parts including fabrication to be under $125.
Bike rack weight 11.5 lbs.
Tandem bike weight 35.0 lbs
Triathlon bike weight 17.0 lbs.
