Who Makes it? what do you tell people who ask that question?

I myself like telling people Mercedes makes it (cause it sounds classy, and I have seen Europian Smarts with the Mercedes logo on them). But I've heard Swatch (yes the watch people) make it, or do you just say "Smart" makes it?
WHAT DO YOU TELL PEOPLE?

My vanity plate is SWATCH....as I collect the watches (and wear them!!)...and knew the history of the vehicle. Seemed the perfect plate to request!

Comment by Jim Yedor on July 29, 2009 at 12:09am: I always say "I'ts a Mercedes" which quiets the "Do you feel safe crowd". I've seen them on EBay classified as a Chrysler smart car. This is due to the former Daimler-Chrysler name. Of course the cars have nothing to do with Chrysler and never did. If you say "Daimler" you get a blank look even though it's the actual maker of Mercedes-Benz automobiles. my license is TINIBNZ. People laugh and then I tell them it's actully made by Mercedes and they go "Oh!"

The answer to "Do you feel smart driving it?" is the explanation of the Swatch/Mercedes collaboration. More than they usually want to know.

Most people have a look of "realization" when you say smart, because they'll say, "OH! It's a 'smart car'!?!" And, when you say it's a subsidiary of Mercedes, they don't go down the path of thinking you bought a Yugo or something.
