How long have you waited to get your Smart? Unfortantely, I signed up in April and was told it may take up to six months. I'm still holding out hope that it won't be that long. I saw some people waitied over a year before taking delivery of their Smart.

I wonder why its taking so long for Smart cars to make it to the States. There are plenty of well established Mercedes dealership here and I would think that Mercedes would have no trouble running things smoothly. I haven't gotten a phone call yet from the local gm or sales rep on my vehicle.

Anyone have some words of wisdom or encouragement for someone waiting for their Smart to arrive?

I'm currently in the "90 day window", which actually was adjusted a month ago by adding a month to it. We pre-registered last April, so it's been well over a year; although, to be fair, they just started 6 months ago. And, when we registered, the approximate date for us to get one was 3rd to 4th quarter of this year.

I reserved Nov 7, 2007 from Texas. I sent an email and got an answer yesterday that was very discouraging. They cannot even predict a delivery date; they are saying "several weeks to several months".

What a way to run a business

Had to wait a year for mine too. I agree its the limited production facilities in France that are the bottleneck.
The refused one are called orphans and each dealer has their own policy on them. My dealer here in Arlington VA always seems to have one or two around but they add a paint protection package (duh) and a lo-jack option and increase the price by 1k. I have had mine for almost 2 weeks and am having a ball driving it.

Here in Colorado, we have an "orphan List". When someone declines a car when it comes in to the dealer, the next person on the orphan list (for that model) gets called to see if they want it. Unfortunatly, there is a $2,700 extra charge for orphan cars because the dealership adds on a clear bra, a top of the line sound system and other things, whether you want them or not. I think this is a scam. They tell us we have to wait until Oct 2009 to encourage the purchase of orphans. Thoughts?

Amador - you can go online to get an estimate of the delivery date DDE. It has a 90 day window for the delivery date. The amount of wait time depends upon which Delivery Center you are assigned (geographic region) since they are trying to assure that each region gets regular flow of deliveries.

Al - If you want an orphan contact your local delivery center and asked to be put on the list. If they call you you need to quickly decide if you want what is not be accepted. You will also have the option to cancel your reservation and get a refund or pick up a 2nd car.

Is there a way we can see our position in the waiting line?

I waited for just a few days short of a year. That's about what it takes. When they built the facility in France to manufacture the smarts, they limited the amount they can produce. I suspect they did it on purpose...demand will always exceed supply. But regardless, not much we can do about it!

But stay strong! The wait is definitely worth it. I love my car! :)

Unfortunately no encouragement...by the time I get my Smart it will have been over a year. At least for you they had the estimates more in line with actual delivery. When I first preordered in September of last year I was told March or April '08 delivery. I won't actually get mine until September. Let's hope that it's worth it...

Hi Chris, it took us about a year to get ours. It takes some time because not all dealers may not be Mercedes dealers as the Smart is brought in by Roger Pensky group, not Mercedes. They are only bringing in a certain number of them each year. I guess it depends on where you are on the list to get one and whether those ahead of you decide to take the one they ordered or not as to how quickly you will receive yours. Our sister-in-law waited about a year also. It may also depend on where you are located as to how fast you will get one. Good luck. We are winter Texans from Ohio, but our Smart came out of Pennsylvania!
