46.4 mpg going 76-80mph (best MPG yet)

So I decided to let the gauge dictate the speed I drove (within reason) and found that the faster I went, the better the MPG. I didn't test this past 80mph, although traffic was going faster at times. Most of the stretch was highway, but there was a little city and stop and go also. Based on what I got at the pump. I think I've calibrated my gauge too low, but the next step up seemed too high... more testing needed.

Maybe my Smart is atypical, which is just fine with me. Either way, since I've been driving steadier and FASTER, my MPG has been going up, and up. My average for the month of Feb. is 38.9mpg (up from 36.1mpg in Jan.) and that is with 1/2 my driving in stop and go city traffic and using the actually miles out/gas in method averaged over the month.
After my 46.1 fill up, the next fill up was back to my normal of 35.4 for mixed driving. Had I had a not complete fill up, then my next fill up would have given an overly low mpg, which it didn't... confirming that 46.4 was accurate.

Comment by Franoc Kwok on February 24, 2010 at 2:57am: That is impossible. The best you could get is 40 to 41 mpg at 65-70 mph;any speed above 70 mph will drain your tank in a flash. unless you have a diesel version. For gas version,it is a story from the moon.

I think it makes a good arguement, don't you... "Officer, I'm just doing my part to reduce my carbon emissions by driving at the most efficient interstate speed"
